Funny the things you remember… I didn’t see that episode, but I recall a friend telling me about that very scene in the profile. He referred to Junior as a “manganzón,” which is basically a big goofball (among other uses of the word).

I remember that episode and the whole storyline behind it with Martinez being outmaneuvered by the politics of the WBC and the reluctance of HBO to finance some of his opponent selection so he lost his title through sheer politics.

In comes Chavez up the rankings and (what do you know!) gets a shot at the WBC title that Sergio was stripped of and gets a slot on HBO for that vacant title fighting the opponent that HBO initially balked at with Sergio. Jose Sulaiman knew how to pull strings…and I think it was revealed through interviews that Junior was his godson.

The whole thing felt like Ali/Frazier in the sense that the rightful heir to that title was coming back to reclaim what was rightfully his when the WBC could no longer outmaneuver the public outcry for Junior to fight Martinez. What proceeded was AN ABSOLUTE UNDRESSING.

I’m doing this all off of memory but there was a terrific documentary on Netflix called “Maravilla” that went into great detail about the whole WBC switcharoo debacle. I also clearly watching 24/7 and seeing that clip of Junior eating cereal and just being lackadaisical about Sergio and me thinking, “Oh, my God. This guy is going to get picked apart.”

One of the most lopsided PPV mismatches ever.

The 12th round be damned, Chavez didn’t deserve a rematch either. You can’t have just one moment in 12 rounds and think that warrants a rematch. That fight was effectively Sergio’s last hurrah as well. I think he only had two fights after that; a hometown fight where he looked less than good…and then that disastrous outing against Miguel Co—oh, never mind. Sergio is actually fighting recently in low level fights…I just remembered.
