Comments Thread For: Three Sugars, Please: Sugar Ray, Sugar Shane, and the burden of a nickname

When Walker Smith Jnr borrowed the amateur card of his friend, Ray Robinson, he could not have known that Ray Robinson would become the name by which he would forever be remembered. Nor for that matter could Smith/Robinson have predicted that being described as ?sweet as sugar? after a fight in New York in 1939 would result in yet another name ? this time a nickname ? becoming a part of both his legacy and the sport?s lexicon.?

So Sugar Shane was "dabbling " ? Talk about minimizing outright cheating ! And Shane still got easily outboxed.

Only ever one Suger & his name wasn't Leonard, Seals or Mosley. It was Robinson. Cobra's another one, "Lonestar Cobra" Curry, Froch? No Thomas "The motor city Cobra" Hearns. Which leads us to the Hitman. Yes Tommy again not Bobby Hitz or Ricky Hatton. Then of course we have the Gentlemen Corbett, Cooney, Billam Smith & John Hedges. Corbett may have been first but he was certainly no Gentleman. Now I'm starting to waffle, so it's over & out from me!!.........

Mosely is Top 10 LightWeight ever IMO . Mosely started losing once he moved up I give Mayweather no credit beating Mosely. Ray Leonard is a different Animal right there. Sometimes Name’s mean more than Numbers. Mosely can not complete with Leonard or Robinson face to face because Mosely was excellent at 135 but not so much as the Weight Increased . Leonard Robinson are both Top 1-5 ever at 147 . Robinson didn’t have the Luxury of 154 168 . Leonard had Hearns Duran at 147 . Robinson excelled at 147 but “ Kid Gavillin” is not Hearn or Duran . Is Robinson the P4p ever or is it that he’s been pushed down our throats that he Is . Personally IMO I don’t see it . Robinson was Special just as Leonard was . Robinson like all old time Era great’s get credit for the number of fights they participated In and I will never argue with that Fact . But Quality is a factor Also . Robinson also had Armstrong unfortunately the Great Armstrong was done and his friend Robinson gave him a Paycheck. Robinson looks good better at 160 . Jake LaMotta looks good as does fullmer Basillio . Is that better than Hagler it has to Be 1 v 3 or is it really . Robinson kept losing in between . It’s hard to Spit “ Em so it would come down to a Face off . Surely it’s 147 . Pick “ Em

I think the sugar name has became Synonymous with Sugar Ray Leonard to the point that’s what he’s always referred to as it’s like it’s become his first name almost

As a kid, Leonard was what drew me to boxing. I didn't even know "Sugar" was not his and his alone. I must have been early teens before someone educated me on Sugar Ray Robinson.

To which I brilliantly followed up with the question "Does Sugar Ray Leonard know about this other guy using the same nickname?" Yep. Not an intelligent kid, was I?
