You know I was boxing in the Navy back in the 50-60's, and I remember one time we had liberty in Panama, and after leaving the "Lucky Lady" beer joint I stumbled into an old run down boxing gym and there were about 10 kids in there playing around. As would have it I started sparring with about 5 of them all at the same time until I fell down, then they all jumped on me at once and we had a lot of fun. Later on that day I was watching them all spar with one another, and there was this really small kid and he was knocking them other kids all over the place, Big or BIGGER it didn't seem to bother him how big they were. Later after many, Many years I met Roberto in LA when he was being inducted into the National Boxing Hall Of Fame, and he told me HE was that scrawny little street kid in Panama..... Go figure I'm almost 88 years old !!

I was lucky enough to share a beer with Duran at a Bar Restaurant in a place called Veracruz Beach in the Panamanian pacific very near Panama city ,I can definitely confirm the Champ is an absolute living Legend and quite a character too lol, he even shared couple stories both boxing and not boxing related with the group I was in and he really puts the sound effects to it. Priceless

Roberto Duran on his worst day is still more articulate in English than Ray Leonard. Giving RL a job as an announcer was embarrassing. He broadcast rarely used phrases like "Steady be puchin to da haid" and "He thow da ryehan".
Duran was one of the best ever in the ring.

He was a very special fighter to have been able to rise to the stratosphere of sports as he did, without being in the Olympics and the backing money that comes with a gold medal and all the money-people supporting him. He was NOT a media creation, but far from it. He got there on his own God-given talent, no more, except possibly the training of Ray Arcel, which he got AFTER he had earned it on his own. An amazing life story...
Really good post , you make an excellent point. Duran got there with his fists .

That is amazing, what a great memory to have. You probably have a lot of good stories at your age. Just curious , what do you think about the state of boxing now compared to when you were young ? Could todays boxers compete back then with all of the advances in training , nutrition , etc ?
