  • Team Benavidez' logic in pushing for the email belt

The fight between David Benavidez and David Morrell was for the WBC 'interim' and WBA 'regular' belts, mirroring the belts each man held in the weight class below. WBA President Gilberto Mendoza is on record as having said he cooperated with WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman in agreeing that the winner would be joint WBC/WBA mandatory for World Light-Heavyweight Champion Dmitry Bivol. These were positive developments for a number of reasons, but primarily because it would lead to an interesting fight for the division.

On top of the above, Benavidez gave an interview where he said he would be comfortable waiting for the trilogy between Bivol and Artur Beterbiev before demanding his shot. After Bivol defeated Beterbiev events seemed to move quite quickly, with the WBC calling their mandatory almost immediately despite the IBF being next in the rotation. Irrespective of this, had Team Benavidez told the WBC he was still prepared to wait Bivol would presumably not have been forced to vacate.

The alleged $8mil offer from Team Benavidez to Bivol appears to be optics as they knew Bivol was committed to his trilogy. Bivol's vacation of the WBC title soon followed with Benavidez elevated to full beltholder. What was the rationale from Team Benavidez here? Below are some possibilities:
    1. Without the trilogy even having a date yet, Benavidez didn't wish to wait indefinitely.
    2. Benavidez' lack of certainty about getting a shot at the winner.
    3. If the fight happens he can negotiate it as a 'unification' rather than as challenger.
    4. In the meantime he can leverage his 'world' title against other opponents.
    5. The WBA have apparently said they will still order the consolidation so his mandatory position is not completely lost (if one trusts the WBA on these issues).
I personally would have preferred to see Benavidez wait, not least because he may now have burned his bridges. I suppose one can understand his frustration having waited for the Canelo fight in vain.

Since when do fighters politely wait while champions go and have a trilogy with 3 fights in a row? Unprecedented nonsense. Boxing is not a place for nice polite guys who wait.

David was not guaranteed the fight with the trilogy winner. Why did Turki not guarantee it?

David now has a belt with real leverage.

Bivol was not committed to the trilogy. There was no contract.

If the IBF were next in rotation why did they not order the fight? There is no official rotation. Fake news.

The 8m offer was real, even Hearn confirmed it.

What was Davids logic for pushing the fight? It's simple. He had already waited 5 years for a title shot and was sick of waiting. He wanted to force Bivol to fight him.

You're in no position to be proclaiming 'fake news' when you tried to make a claim about a fighter's purse using an obscure AI website with no primary source.

There is legal precedent for the sanctioning body rotation owing to a judgement made during Holyfield's reign as heavyweight champion.

Living in denial still? How about this? Smith paid 500k when he fought beterbiev in Canada.

What legal precedent? Show me evidence.

"To be honest, the only thing that I’m thinking about is that if Bivol wins, there would have to be a rubber match. Who am I to say that they can’t fight another fight? If [Bivol won], I wouldn’t fight until they get that done with and I would move into the fight after they have a trilogy"
