Comments Thread For: Paulie Malignaggi?s Picks: It?s difficult to make the case for Conor Benn winning

Boxing?s so well followed in the UK that Chris Eubank Jnr-Conor Benn was certain to be big over there. But on the eve of them finally fighting, it?s also got some buzz in the US, writes Paulie Malignaggi.

It depends on how the weight affects Eubank for me. His eyes and face didn’t look good at the public weigh in and the rehydration clause of 10 pounds makes me give Benn a decent chance of winning this.

Benn can only charge in & try to land with fast hard punches. That is his only strategy because he completely lacks skills to put punches together or to jab & move or utilise any other way to beat a bigger, stronger man. He has to be Jack Dempsey because he can't be anyone better. CEJ has to get through the first 4 rounds. Once he does, Benn is toasted.

It's hard to make a case for watching this fight! Poor brit fans having to buy, with their hard earned pounds, the vaseline with which Eddy (AKA the used car salesman) will do his thing to them...

Benn might get lucky and put Eubank on q*u*e*e*r street the way Liam did. Pray that doesn't happen because we'll have to endure this clown show all over again for the rematch.

Yeah, I think Paulie's forgetting how much the weight might affect Eubank Jr. He messed up the weight for the first Liam Smith first (even though he made it on the scales) and had zero punch resistance (I know he was caught with an elbow too, which definitely didn't help but even so). He even got buzzed briefly by a non-puncher in Szeremeta (although he also knocked him down four times before the fight was waved off). But I think the weight really swings it in Benn's favour, especially with the rehydration clause on fight day. He's managed to come in under 170lbs, but what will it take out of him? How much weight can he put on between now and the ring walks? If he's a ghost of himself, then Benn just needs to land one of those big looping shots and it's Liam Smith 1 all over again. I just hope Eubank Jr is healthier and stronger than he looks, steps to Benn, and takes the fight to him, giving the smaller man no leverage to wing in those big shots, trying him up and smothering him, and then when he gets ragged, walking him onto an uppercut as he leans over his front foot. I'm not sure I can deal with how insufferable Eddie will be for the next few weeks if the alternative happens!

Benn sounds VERY sure of himself at the press conference. I favour Eubank because he’s more experienced at the weight but somebody with Benn’s confidence and fieriness is capable of pulling off the upset.

Also to note, Eubank is a decent counter puncher and Benn telegraphs big looping punches. Whether Eubank will be sharp enough after draining himself remains to be seen.
