  • Comments Thread For: Does Berlanga-Sheeraz deserve top billing over Stevenson-Zepeda?

Chris Algieri and Paulie Malignaggi discuss whether the non-title super middleweight bout between Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz should be the headliner on July 12, rather than the lightweight title fight between Shakur Stevenson and William Zepeda.

Hard to argue that it doesn't.
Sheeraz seems to get a push and berlanga got credibility for going the 12 with carnela who was supposed to make a knockout reel of him.

meanwhile shakira ran from edwin for literally the whole 12 rounds and whos to say he wont do it again. The guy shoulda lost that fight. Zepeda can try to make it entertaining but shakira will just make it a snoozfest.

No, neither has any notable wins nor are they world champions or even top fighters in their division.

Shakur & Zepeda are quite famous among large populations, i.e Mexico & the hoods of America.

Even without being any more famous than that (which they both are), they're a lot more high-profile than either Berlanga (despite the KO streak lol) or Sheeraz who no-one here in the UK knows (outside of the hardcore).

In sporting terms one contest is at least a level above the other so no, it doesn't deserve top billing in the slightest but more importantly, us fans & the rest of the viewers don't deserve it to be.

Energy is real, as are the levels in boxing.

Of course not, but the real question: does it actually matter? Shakur is probably getting paid what he wants, so he has no reason to complain. You can't always have the fame/glory and the fortune. Shakur doesn't need the main-event pressure anyway.

Shakur vs. Zepeda doesn't have the momentum it once did, given their recent performances. Maybe Turki is taking that into consideration.

I'm just looking forward to Berlanga getting humbled big time... This guy really think he is someone... Another Canelo opponent is gonna get exposed..

                Money quote from Paulie:

Malignaggi said Sheeraz is desperate, too, coming off what he classified as “mentally, a bad performance […] you decided not to have the balls that night."

                LOL

Shakur is not popular outside of pure boxing fans and even within boxing fans he's not well liked due to his style. The only boxer currently fighting that popular in the Hood is Tank then 3 steps below is Boots ( who's popular regionally Philly, Delaware, Jersey). Shakur is popular in just jersey and boxing fans.
