Probably the most underated skill in boxing in intelligence. Not book smarts, but the ability to accelerate wisdom. If you watch Tyson coming up, you can see how he applied fighting theory developed by Dempsey... Not the obvious either, but things like pivoting, feints, etc. Fighters that are intelligent and coachable can learn to be much better accelerating wisdom.Been watching, training, and reading a lot lately — and it got me thinking:
We all talk about speed, power, footwork… but what do you think is the most underrated skill in boxing?
For me, it’s patience. Not just ring patience — but patience with progress, training, even watching fights and seeing how things unfold.
Curious what others think. What do you wish more fighters (or fans) paid attention to? Could be a mindset thing, a physical detail, or even something about how we watch the sport.
Watch the James Joyce as an example of the opposite: Joyce developed an approach and absolutely was unable to modify, adapt, adjust it in any way. Unfortunately trainers, even as far back as the mid eighteen hundreds have lamented how amateur boxing breeds ******ity. It is far to basic, emphasizes scoring at the expense of hitting hard, and develops bad habits that do not apply professionally. This according to many trainers, despite the parallel of olympic fighters that do well professionally, and certain programs like the Cubans, that have always been exceptional.Comment
