I wouldn't use that language; it's hard to be a trainer and see your fighter facing such adversity. But the truth is that Somodio made a mistake. As you and many others have said, Stanionis was still competitive. He wasn't winning, but he wasn't being beaten from post to post. Somodio should have:

1) asked his fighter how he was feeling
2) tell him that if things got worse, he would throw in the towel
3) or say that if things didn't improve in the next couple of rounds, he would stop it

After all that preparation, Stanionis deserved at least one more round; the early stoppage was a dishonor to all the preparation Stanionis put in.

It was important that Stanionis be given the opportunity to leave it in the ring. Stanionis is not one of PBC's high-valued assets, so being a titlist is integral to his value. Without a title, his career is going to be in limbo. Who knows how long it'll take b4 he comes back.

The dudes a 15 fight wonder without the nessersary experience need to make it competitive against his opponent who has 30 plus fights.

Interesting perspective and has merit but probably not one his trainer should be considering when his fighter is getting beaten down. I can see why a lot of people think it was stopped too early but also sympathise with the trainer's emotions. Like has been said by others many times, "better to stop too early than too late."

Agree with all of that, but Somodio should've understood that last week. This guy is a spit bucket carrier or a pad holder, not a head trainer.

Exactly right. This was a WW unification fight. 'Live to fight another day' is for journeymen fighters. This was a world champion in the most important fight of his life. Yes, he was losing every round and he was hurt in that last round, but he finished that round very strong and wanted to continue. Live to fight another day may not happen for a very long while for Stanionis and probably never again at that level. He should feel massively betrayed.

I'm not sure what ptek was insinuating, but I believe Stanionis was inactive for two reasons: PBC didn't have a substantial budget, and they didn't value Stanionis enough to get him a stay-busy or a notable opponent. They allowed Stanionis to rot on the vine, and he isn't the only one.

Stanionis also should've fought Ennis in November, but supposedly his team didn't like the offer iirc. So he stayed inactive for 11 months. Chronic inactivity; doing way more training than fighting under the spotlight. That's why it was important to let Stanionis go out on his shield.
