It absolutely does. Do you not understand the meaning of the term? If you aren't going to ever get another fight with the champ, and others fight you to "earn" their shot, you're a gatekeeper, regardless of how highly some rando "Oracle01" on a forum thinks of you. Although I happen to agree that he's a tough out for anyone in the division not named Canelo because it's a weak division. But he needed a knockout to win when he got stopped himself vs Canelo.

You don't think he will ever fight or be a world champion again at 168 just because currently Canelo is hogging the belts? lol. Gatekeeper means you are not GOOD enough to be a champion again, which does not apply to Plant because he can be champion again. He could also beat Canelo if given the chance considering he has improved since their last fight and Canelo and regressed.
As of now, he's a gatekeeper by definition. Maybe that will change if he's still around when Canelo retires, but he's not even getting fights that could earn him mandatory shots, and we've already seen what those mean when it comes to the Ginger Duck.Comment

If Pacheco can't beat plant he fvkcing sucks.
That being said neither guy deserves a Saudi paydayComment

No, it also needs to be true that the fighter won't get another title shot and is stuck fighting only up and coming fighters as a test for whether they're "worth" facing the undisputed titlist, and that the undisputed titlist wants to keep all the titles. Plant could have beaten Scull, but he couldn't get that fight, even though he was the former champ in the same organization. That doesn't tell you anything?Comment

If that ain’t a step backwards , I don’t know what isComment

I hope he does get that fight and gets paid well for it. I honestly didn't realize he had an even bigger fanboy on here than me, since I've been high on his skills for some time. I thought he had the best chance to upset Canelo of any of the belt holders at the time, and thought he fought well vs both Canelo and Benavidez. But he's just not getting any fights and he's been clout chasing like crazy. Maybe if he gets away from PBC... None of them are getting meaningful fights.Comment

I like Plant and respect his skills but unfortunately he has no power to keep opponents truthful
Hard to win professional fights by going the distance with power punchers hence Canelo

He's got some power, as he showed by sleeping Dirrell. But not for guys with good chins. Could probably beat the snot out of Munguía though. And he'd have beaten Scull if the IBF let him. It's beyond me why they didn't rank one of their former champs. He's not rated in the top 15 by ANY of the alphabet organizations. Jermall Charlo is, so technically that fight would be a step forward for him. Pacheco would be even better. Or Mbilli or Berlanga, or maybe Osley Iglesias. Those are all tough fights for him though, except Berlanga.Comment
