Cardio conditioning isn't universal, it's specialized. For example, you could put a marathon runner on a wrestling mat and he's going to gas out inside 3 minutes. You put a full time wrestler on a heavybag workout, same thing.
So yeah, there isn't a 1:1 translation of benefits from running to boxing. Boxers often choose to do roadwork because it's something they can work on by themselves. They don't need a gym, they don't need a trainer, they don't need a sparring partner. Other boxers might choose to swim instead. Guys like Mikey Garcia didn't do any cardio work besides excessive sparring. You could shadowbox a ton too.
Also sometimes roadwork is more for weight management than fight endurance.

I’d say roadwork is beneficial on several levels, but the type of stamina needed for running is different from that required for boxing. I’ve run various races — from 100 meter dashes and 5ks, to 26.2 mile marathons — at decent times, but sparring in the ring was a horse of a different color. Nonetheless, roadwork is a time-honored activity for good reason. If it weren’t beneficial for boxing, the old-timers would’ve discarded it long ago. Everyone wants to re-invent the wheel.

There are numerous alternatives to traditional roadwork methods that can offer efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and minimal disruption. For instance, utilizing modern technologies such as drones for surveying or 3D printing for creating road components can significantly reduce labor and material costs. Furthermore, cold-in-place recycling and micro milling techniques allow for road repairs without the need for extensive demolition, preserving the existing road structure while enhancing its durability.

I was in the kind of shape where I could go fight a 12 rd fight on a few days notice for a title, or do 12rds of sparring. Stationary bikes provide a safer alternate to running for a sport where the participants usually come from poor neighhoods with poorly maintained roads and road designs not to mention beathing auto and truck exhaust.crimsonfalcon07 likes this.
