It's crazy because before he fought Zhang I always used to think how Joyce physically looked really young for his age, but then after the Zhang fight all of a sudden he's got wrinkles on his face and going grey.

Joyce is an intelligent, educated man & an artist. IMO he needs to call it a day & concentrate on putting paint on canvas, instead of being forcibly put on canvas. I like Joe & I would be really saddened if he becomes a brain damaged zombie & he is in real danger of that if he carries on boxing.

Sony Liston was illiterate, and showed as a brute, a knuckle dragger... Liston was, alas, very intelligent, and had the type of intelligence that showed in the ring.

I see intelligent British fighters, intelligent with respect to speaking well, obviously relatively well educated... Men like Joyce and Wardley. Wardley? who started fighting with footwork, angles, defensive skills, and just abandon them for a punch... Not intelligent at all. And Joyce? a man unable to adjust in the ring, unable to modify in any way a style that collectively was figured out and effectively destroyed his reign as a competitor in the division. It just goes to show different levels of intelligence, and how deceptive fighting intelligently can be.

By comparison? Mike Tyson has always been a historian, a master at watching other fighters to develop his technical chops and Holyfield was so coachable that he beat Tyson and Bowe listening to his corner (Turner taught him to push on Mike's weak point of balance instead of back off, and had him outbox Bowe the fight he won)... Yet Holyfield often decided, on a whim to slug it out... I guess it takes all kinds.

Sonny was a great man. A lot of people, notably that ignorant, racist, tripe hound Larry Merchant, had it in for Sonny. He came from desperate poverty & he became world champion & he got treated like dirt. Man deserved a whole lot better. I did laugh that 20 years later white people were saying 'why did Floyd disrespect Larry Merchant?' Floyd knew Merchant was a dirty lil toe rag.

Billeau 2 : there is almost no link between ring IQ & IQ outside the ring. Lloyd Honeyghan, Naseem Hamed & Joe Calzaghe all had exceptional skills, & ridiculously high ring IQs, You would struggle to get a coherent sentence out of any of them. Joe would probably be your best bet, if he was sober.

Lennox Lewis had a high IQ & a high ring IQ but I think he was also very unusual.

I thought that was what you said
He was one of my favourite fighters and I know he abused dope and alcohol
So was wondering if the slurring was from boxing or cause he whacked
