Comments Thread For: Oscar De La Hoya: It's the fighters who are killing the sport

Oscar De La Hoya has said the fighters are to blame for the poor health of boxing. On his weekly 'Clap Back Thursday' social media segment, De La Hoya told his 1.2m followers on Instagram that he felt the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson spectacle was "scripted" adding that it was "a horrible fight... It was just awful." "It was wishful thinking for all those idiots who thought they were going to get Mike Tyson of the nineties come out and rip somebody's head off," De La Hoya said.

He mentions Mayweather/McGregor, but that fight illustrated a greater problem: if boxers can make big $$$ for crossover circus bouts, the consumer has demonstrated that they'll allow it. Jake Paul is simply taking advantage.

Overmarination is what kills the sport, and the fighters aren't the only ones responsible for that. The fighter's team (promoter, manager, trainer) share just as much as blame, if not more.

It's the fighters, of course. Just look at the Charlo brothers. They're in their prime and got plenty of fights to choose from in their own stable, but would rather stay inactive. You can be sure uncle Al has been asking them to participate in his Amazon shows because let's face it, it's not so simple to assemble a large group of fighters in any fight card. This can't be uncle Haymon's fault.

I would say it’s the relative inactivity at the elite level. For example, I don’t expect to see guys fighting every month but it’s frustrating to only see your favorite fighters once or twice per year.

Two fights should be the minimum barring injuries, not the maximum and I believe boxing would be in a better place if more top fighters fought at least three times per year.

Calm yourself down, fishnets. Canelo is ten times the boxer you ever were and you lost every big fight you had. Even Sturm destroyed you. Yes, I know you are reading this Fishnets. Anymore of this and Nash will set Eddie Hills 3-0 to hunt your ass down. Nash out - His Excellency

Yeah, what Thongdance McFishnets is saying really only applies to the elite level.

Imagine never having headlined a card & you've got Oscar De La Hoya telling the world that you're an overpaid diva who needs to fight harder for less money ffs!!

I agree Felix Sturm beat Oscar and in my opinion Oscar beat Felix Trinidad but that's just my opinion. What is not opinion is that every Canelo fight has a 100% guaranteed outcome.
