Povetkin vs. Peter for the IBF interim heavyweight title?

Dan Rafael says Alexander Povetkin will probably be fighting Sam Peter, not Eddie Chambers, for the interim IBF title.

    From ESPN:

With unified heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko out for several months following shoulder surgery and planning to face mandatory Eddie Chambers upon his return in the first half of 2010, Alexander Povetkin (17-0, 12 KOs), Klitschko's other mandatory, will be allowed to fight for a vacant interim belt. With the IBF approving the interim title, Povetkin withdrew from a planned stay-busy fight Friday night in Baltimore, which was to have been his first bout under trainer Teddy Atlas. "Finally, the waiting is over for Povetkin," Sauerland Event general manager Chris Meyer said. "He gets what he deserves -- a world title fight in the near future. We are all tired of waiting for Klitschko." Povetkin's interim title fight likely will be against ex-titlist Samuel Peter, probably in Europe, according to Top Rank's Bob Arum, Peter's promoter. "[Top Rank's] Carl Moretti and Chris Meyer discussing the fight," Arum said. "If we make it, we'll pull Sam off the Nov. 13 and Dec. 5 cards he was supposed to be on." Povetkin-Peter could land on Jan. 23 and possibly be paired on Showtime along with a U.S.-based fight between Arthur Abraham and Andre Dirrell, one of the Super Six Group Stage 2 bouts.

Why on Earth? Peter was already made to look silly against Chambers. He's a waste of space in the division right now.

Sam Peter is ranked too high by the IBF after losing his last two fights with live opponents. There are several others who are more deserving. But Peter has had two powerful promoters: Don King, and now Bob Arum.

I think it's an interesting fight, although I don't think it should be for the interim title.

Peter hasn't earned his spot, and Wlad tried to fight Povetkin before and Povetkin pulled out injured. Now that Wlad need a couple of months extra before fighting again, AP should be willing to wait.

Peter seems to have rededicated himself a little bit, looked decent against McGee. Should be an interesting fight and could turn out to be a pretty good heavyweight scrap.

                He's African.

I like this fight better. I didn't want to see Povetkin-Chambers II, not because it wouldn't have been competitive, but I like both fighters and want to see both get a shot at Wlad.

Peter has been coming in around 240, which is still huge but better then 265 ya kno? If he can come in under 235 I give him a good chance against suspect Povetkin. I say suspect cuz Chambers schooled him for five rounds and Povetkin really hasn't been tested.
