  • AI Will Eventually Be Used To Score Fights

This isn’t a news announcement or anything; it’s simply a thought. The day is fast approaching when artificial intelligence will be used to effectively score fights. AI will accurately determine the number of punches landed, and gauge the force of those punches. AI could also determine other factors like defense, but these are by far the two main scoring criteria. This would obviously do away with human judges, greatly reduce corruption and eliminate incompetent scoring. The sport will improve immensely, and fans will come back in droves. I can’t wait to see that day.

yes they should be able to set it up so it shows consistency & that will make fighters and their teams trust it

The controversy is part of the appeal. It's not a bug it's a feature.

Yes, but not in the near future.

They've been trying to implement an automated balls/strike system in baseball. It should happen by 2026.
Again, too many bad umpire calls in baseball, that cost games.
Nonethless, you still need umpires/referees. They'll use earphones.

Other sports have instant replay. Where coaches can challenge calls. I think that's necessary for boxing, when you have bad calls on knockdowns vs slips, etc.

The problem with boxing, is it's not just balls/strikes. It's an entirely different world in order to create technology than can measure "effectiveness" or "ring generalship".

IMO What's more realistic is to keep judges. But have them base their scoring on real time data. not just their eyes.
Also, as they already do in some bouts, they should do open scoring. (similar to other sports)

Probably better than subjective biased humans.

Fighters probably have to wear special gloves for the AI to keep track of. Might have to sense and distinguish if they're hitting gloves, body, head, etc.

AI if it works would be great. For now you can have 5 judges, three at ringside and two in different rooms watching a monitor without voice. I would not let judges know until the end of the fight, something like sequester jury. And if anyone of them had a shady scorecard, he needs to explain his crap, accountability would eliminate part of the problem. People forget how they score fights and when you start calling them out, a count down begins.

                Good post.

I would consider 2026 the near future — anything in the next couple of years, really. I recall a conversation in 2007 with a brain surgeon I used to work for, who was also a big baseball fan. I stated with assurance that baseball would one day use technology to call balls and strikes. AI was obviously nowhere in sight, but the necessary technology was already being used on TV. He disagreed with me, but you and I know it’s finally about to happen.

I don’t think it would be difficult for AI to detect punch effectiveness. Ring generalship would be much trickier, but who really scores that in practice anyway? Some form of human involvement might be inevitable, but the most important scoring aspects would be completely handled by artificial intelligence. And yes, I agree that open scoring should be required even now.

Special gloves might be a requirement, at least in the beginning, but not necessarily. I believe AI algorithms, using various camera locations, would be able to detect punches scored from every angle and their force/effectiveness. Honestly, I don’t think the technology is far off. It might even be here as we speak.

Not until you have sensors in the gloves that can measure power/impact, then in a perfect world AI cross-referencing the glove data with video and you will know for sure who was hit the most and hardest every second for the whole match,

                    On checking its already here.
