  • Comments Thread For: No signs of Artur Beterbiev aging, no lingering problems from surgery, says assistant trainer

Artur Beterbiev is 39 years old, which is past the prime years for most fighters. He has not been overly active, fighting once in 2022 and once in 2023. And ahead of his second fight of 2024, Beterbiev underwent knee surgery to repair a ruptured meniscus.

This assistant trainer is named John Scully and he's worth mentioning...

Now, Scully has one tape since 2019... Same questions / Same answers .... shocking, right ?

Beterbiev isn't going anywhere next Saturday...

It's not like he had reconstructive knee surgery. He had a meniscus shave.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Joel Embiid had the same injury last year during the NBA season. Towns returned in just 4 weeks, Embiid in 8 weeks, and those guys are ~300 pounds and 7 feet tall. In general it's a 6-8 week recovery timeline for most people.

He might have some arthritis in the knee as he ages but it's not going to impact him much if at all now.

Even if there were lingering issues, you wouldn't expect a trainer to admit it. Of course he's better than ever. This has been his best training camp, etc.

This is a gross, misleading oversimplification. The very absolute best case scenario is that recovery was 8 weeks , after which he went directly into a 12 week camp. That's a huge load on someone who never had time to anything resembling a proper rehab.

As for the comparisons to KAT and Embiid, they are also misleading. Those 2 had surgeries in their late 20s, not at 39-40. On top of that, KAT came back and played absolutely terrible.

I can't blame Beterbiev for taking the fight in Oct, it's highly looked forward to and has huge money behind it, however make no mistake about it - the knee injury has absolutely made him a worse fighter than he was. 40 year olds don't come back from surgeries in the top shape - ever.

Following the successful surgical repair of a torn meniscus, it typically takes four to eight weeks to recover fully. It can take several more months of physical therapy and rehabilitation, however, to ensure your knee has the strength and stability it needs to return to sports with minimal risk of reinjury.

What's else is he gonna say?

"Yeah Artur is looking old. That knee is gonna be a big problem vs someome with intelligent feet like Bivol".

If Bivol wins, I'm sure so some thinly veiled excuses will come out about the quick turnaround in rescheduling after the injury.

Other way around. Superbee is an OG Beterbiev fan like myself. That's baby Artur in his profile pic.

I am looking forward to the day when a trainer says before the fight - my fighter is hopeless, he doesn't show up for training, he is eating too much, he has no stamina, he is really getting old and he is getting knocked out in training by his sparring partners who are just average club fighters. I don't think he will last 3 rounds.
