Comments Thread For: Terri Harper dethrones Rhiannon Dixon in her first defence

Former world champion Terri Harper used all her experience and ring nous to take the play away from Rhiannon Dixon during most of the 10 rounds they shared in Sheffield tonight (September 28). She then took away Dixon's WBO lightweight belt, winning a decision by scores of 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94.

She's not just a one-time champion at super featherweight. She also held the WBA 154 title (and the IBO, but nobody cares about that).

Won WBC super featherweight title, 2 successful defenses, lost to Baumgardner (also concurrently held IBO title for 5 successful defenses)
Won WBA/IBO super welterweight title, 2 successful defenses, moved down to 147
Stopped by Sandy Ryan in her WBO 147 title challenge
      Won WBO lightweight title (today)

Notable opposition (all current, former, and/or future world titlists):
W vs Eva Wahlstrom UD 10
D vs Natasha Jonas SD 10
W vs Katharina Thanderz TKO 9
L vs Alycia Baumgardner TKO 4
W vs Hannah Rankin UD 10
W vs Ivana Habazin UD 10
D vs Cecilia Braekhus MD 10 (I had Harper losing this, but she had no business fighting at 154 anyway)
L vs Sandy Ryan RTD 4
W vs Rhiannon Dixon UD 10

Who did she beat for the WBA at 154 ? I only remember her fighting Rankin for the IBO and the Braekhus fight for the vacant WBO, which like you mentioned was ruled a Draw

I watched the fight and was amazed.

Amazed that Dixon ever won a title. She needs to watch the video and fire her trainer.

Rankin had both the WBA and the IBO belts. You may be confused because boxrec has delisted WBA titles. Rankin won both the WBA and IBO belts against Lindberg, defended them once against Ayala, and then lost them to Harper.

I've seen Dixon fight before but I don't recall her looking that bad but it was also against inferior competition. I thought she'd beat Harper not necessarily because she was more skilled but because she's fresher and I thought she'd be stronger.

She didn't have an effective jab and she would only briefly get in range to land effective punches before she'd smother herself or allow Harper to clinch.

DIxon's trainer is former champ Anthony Crolla. I know Dixon came from the white collar boxing scene and has no amateur background, so it's understandable that she'd be raw. One would hope Crolla is teaching her to use a jab and how to fight on the inside but perhaps it all went out the window when she was facing someone who was punching back and trying to win.

Yep , she only had a brief window to land any punches but smothered herself and threw herself into clinches every single time. She has no inside game at all. You're 100% right on the things that Crolla should have already taught her. I haven't seen her fight before. Who knows, maybe she had a bad night , or maybe Harper gave her a bad night ?
