  • Comments Thread For: The best British heavyweights in history

There was a time when the phrase "British heavyweight" was universally accompanied, at least on the western side of the Atlantic, with the adjective "horizontal": a barbed reference to British boxers' repeated failures for almost a century to come close to the biggest prize in sports.

Bob Fitzsimmons v 'gentleman' (in the loosest sense) Jim Corbett. Fitzsimmons rendered Corbett incapable with one body shot. How many SMWs would have been able to take a big Cruiserweight out with one body punch? The fact that Corbett was a de****able, prejudiced toe rag makes it even better. One punch!

If anyone deserves the Hollywood treatment then it Fitz. He lived & travelled in a time of steam, rubbed shoulders & crossed swords with Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, "Judge"Roy Bean, Teddy Roosevelt & the Prince of Wales (later King Edward the VII) & held undisputed title's @ 3 weights. A truely fascinating life!!........

Mick Higgs. Yes, it would make a great film. Fitzsimmons & Tom Molyneaux are the 2 fighters that, IMO, are just crying out for a full celluloid treatment. Fitzsimmons & Wyatt Earp is just comedy gold, you literally couldn't make that @@@@ up! I also think Randy Turpin's story would make a great film but it would be a """""ing dark & bleak film by any standards because he had a wretched ending.
