Comments Thread For: Unsung hero Joey Dawejko hopes big win over Richard Torrez Jr. will lead towards a great life

It was the worst retirement ever. Joey Dawejko laughs, knowing that statement is correct, considering that since he walked away from the sport in 2022, he's had eight fights and eight one-rounders for the Team Combat League.

I wish Joey luck, but this isn't Canelo. Torres isn't that big yet. A win here gets him another payday.

Joey is a very short heavyweight, and is up there in age, but he's as tough as nails.
He's no easy out for anyone, and has beaten a few fighters who thought they were going to add him to their win column.
If by some miracle he were to beat Torres, that would definitely breath some more life into his boxing career.
Joey won't ever win the heavyweight championship, but he will surprise a few more fighters before his career is done.
I had to comment on this honest, hard working, take on all fighters that are put in front of him, because he's earned his respect in, and out of the ring.
You can't help but root for someone like Joey, because he takes a licking, and keeps on ticking.
In a war you couldn't do better than having someone like Joey fighting along side you. He's earned his fighting badge of honor within his lifetime.

Good article on Joey, who I have followed for years from afar. Best wishes for him in the remainder of his career and his life.

As others have mentioned Dawejko is a tough as nails journeyman with some boxing skills. He's short and also short armed and carries around a bit of extra weight.

He had been iron-chinned for most of his career. The back to back stoppage losses might be an indicator that his durability isn't what it once was...or it could be that he prepared even less for those fights (as happened in the Charles Martin fight).

He probably doesn't have the offensive power or work rate to beat Torrez, Jr but he could give him some much needed rounds and make things more difficult for the Olympian (who has been fed a steady diet of very limited opposition). We'll see how that chin holds up....

Regardless, guys like Joey are the foundation of this sport we love. They provide the attraction to local cards with fighters you never heard of (and likely never will) and they are the journeyman gatekeepers for the fighters who aspire to the higher levels. Good luck Tank.

Would you guys say this is Torrez' toughest opponent thus far? I've seen a couple of his fights but I'm not super familiar with him.

It's hard to say because we don't really know what's left in the tank of Dawejko. He's been on a decent run since his comeback but it's been against limited opposition. If we get the Joey that fought Jennings or Kuzmin then I would say yes.

In his last fight, Torrez fought 14-0 Brandon Moore. Moore wasn't the most skilled and had a suspect gas tank (and leaky defense) but he came to win (probably the first opponent of Torrez that had that temperament) and threw some heavy punches.

Dawejko, in my opinion, doesn't throw enough and sometimes gets into the mindset of a sparring partner. He can be hard to hit clean and he's durable tho. Against Torrez he wouldn't be fighting someone who towered over him. I think for Torrez, the challenge in this fight would be what happens if his power doesn't blow out his opponent and the guy facing him isn't afraid of him whatsoever? What does the Olympian look like in the later rounds? These are the tests that Dawejko (hopefully) will ask of Torrez in this fight. I don't think there's much risk of an upset however.

I love Joey but he never reached his potential due to not letting his hands go and taking a risk. If he wants to change his boxing life, he has to do this against Torres

Thanks for the insight. Looking forward to seeing what happens!
