First time reader of the mailbag and I saw no bias racially whatsoever. I clearly don’t know the history between Breadman & this Hewitt dude but as a hardcore fan myself, Spence/Crawford was about as 50/50 as any fight I can think of for a good minute!! I thought Spence’s pressure would be pretty tough to deal with for anyone but if it could be handled, Bud would be the guy.
What I did see was unexpected!! I’ve seen Spence hit with much bigger shots than that first jab that dropped him and all credit to Bud for the performance, but it seemed that Spence just didn’t have his legs. After the fight, based on the info from Virgil Hunter who is about as credible as it gets, mentioned Spence had made a run up a particular path a few days before that he believed would have required over a week to recover. That tracks with what I saw perfectly.
I also believe that despite the goat to become undisputed at 147, Spence started competing at that 146 at 15 & won his first Golden Gloves & first US National Championship! Impressive feats but I know I wouldn’t have been able to still get to my 15 yr old weight at 33!! Despite the dietary advances, I don’t think either fighter gets the respect they deserve for staying at the weight specifically for that fight!
Also, based on PPV history, the fact that Spence made the fight happen by agreeing to 50/50 is very rare in the sport today. If he didn’t want the fight, he coulda easily leveraged his numbers and moved up years before. But waited for Bud to get away from Top Rank who’ve always seemed to have trouble promoting fighters daring to be great, particularly when it’s not in-house money.
I hope both guys stay active and before Canelo, go again. I think it’d be much more competitive based on history and what I see. But Bud is a gym rat like Floyd was and would be a clear favorite.
But for anyone to say they saw that coming? Bud winning ? Of course. Spence seemingly with no legs taking away his strengths? Nah…
I do believe Bud had a major coaching edge, starting to prepare for the eventual fight in 2018 according to BoMac. They did well by Bud for that but less talented & less durable guys didn’t come apart like that vs Bud. I don’t believe anyone saw it one-sided with Spence unable to compete.
Far as Boots? He has looked like a beast with as much pure athleticism as anyone since Roy Jones but it’s unlikely Bud or Spence will be opponents. But he could wait on Ryan Garcia for a big check while he tries to unify belts. Plenty of money coming to 147 too. Hard to see Boots losing to me. Bud being the exception but he is 10yrs older & seems to be aiming for Canelo and I think he’d win. ✌️

Great fighter nearly always make poor trainers. Just like in the other sports. HOF BB players who try to manager generally fail. Long time unspectacular catchers do. In boxing, a great fighter has in his repertoire a distain for the skills of his opponents. Beat me? Forget it. This doesn't translate well to training young fighters on the way up. Another problem is the tendency to superimpose the great trainer's fighting style on his evolving novice. The great Joe Frazier is a classic example with his son Marvis, a gifted boxer. Freddy Roach, a popular ESPN Friday night fighter, and no more, took flight as a brilliant trainer. A case in point. The D3vil likes this.

I have read their email to Breadman and I must say I did not see those people as haters or trolls. I could not see why Breadman was getting so worked up about those posts - other than perhaps the topic was one of the "sacred cow" fighters that he was heavily invested in. They were simply disagreeing with Breadman and they were articulating coherent arguments free of malice. They seemed like informed and knowledgeable boxing fans.

I am willing to bet you had great potential but didn’t reach a certain status in life so you’re bitter. You talk in a condescending way that I have heard before. So I decide to let you have it, like I did him, and it’s why we haven’t spoken in about 14 years.Dbudge87 likes this.

Maybe Bread hasn't something going on that is stressing him. The personal attack against this dude was weird but it is what it is. Either way, I always enjoy the mailbag.
