  • Comments Thread For: Erislandy Lara calls 160 pounds 'a whole different ball game' for Danny Garcia

Middleweight titlist Erislandy Lara, 41, boxing's oldest active world belt holder, will face Danny Garcia in the co-feature of the Saul "Canelo" Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga pay-per-view on Sept. 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

He’s right. There are weight classes for a reason. Danny’s activity, or lack thereof, in the past few years will tell on fight night. García has never been stopped before, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this becomes his first trip to La La Land.

Danny Garcia's story is quite interesting. He splashed onto the scene with his KO of Amir Khan. KO'd a super aged Morales who obviously wasn't in his premier weight class at that time either. Then he goes on to some mediocre wins and comes up short when he faced the top level competition of his generation (Spence, Porter, Thurman). Yet his status remains relevant with just about anyone he faces. He's not some super unique type of fighter. Just durable, strong and usually stays busy in the ring.

I wish he fought more often after getting his massive paychecks against the top level fighters, but clearly if you follow any of his socials, he's living the life and dabbing in other areas. Boxing is not quite on his mind as much as it used to be, but he's mostly been an entertaining fighter to watch.

This fight will solidify where his head is at and if boxing will still be part of his life or just an after thought. Although Lara is in his 40s, he's been looking like early 30s lately. Danny can't sleep on Lara and we'll know quickly whether this new weight helps Danny whose also aged, or shows, he's not as effective at the higher weights than when he was winning at 140lbs -147lbs.

At what (catch)weight will these two pensioners spar each other?
        Exactly!

You forgot that Danny had a great win versus Matthysse — probably his best win. Garcia has gone far with limited skills. I believe that one of his best attributes is his ring IQ. All that said, Danny’s inactivity, relatively small size and, as you point out, distraction, make him a huge underdog versus Lara. All things considered, I think this is a joke of a fight. A more deserving contender should face Landy for a title shot.

I think he’s probably right, cannot see how Danny can go from light welter all the way to middleweight with such little activity lately. Would love to be wrong but I don’t see that fight going his way

Danny's strictly a counter puncher. His style has caused him losses but it's also added longevity. A good Counter puncher is like a good veteran curve ball or knuckle ball pitcher in the MLB.

I don't even see Danny as a 154lber let alone a 160lber. It looks like he is taking the easy way out by not wanting to take off the weight or perhaps he is staying clear of the murderer's row at 154.

This is true but I don't think Lara is going to complain. He also knows that despite Danny's inactivity, he does bring a crowd and audience to the TV. This means a pretty nice paycheck for himself against a guy that he just might have too much and make it look easy. Easy win, easy paycheck.
