Comments Thread For: The middleweight malaise of 2024

Middleweight is one of boxing's classic divisions, with generation-spanning all-time greats such as Marvin Hagler, Jake LaMotta and Harry Greb making 160lbs the primary base of operation during their careers, while others - "Sugar" Ray Robinson and Sam Langford, for instance - moonlit there for a time

If you start comparing today's guys to, like, Ketchel, Greb, SRR, Monzon or Hagler or even to more modern greats like McCallum, Toney, RJJ or B-Hop then they will, obviously, fall short. Thats not really fair, what is a man supposed to do?

This division is very thin to begin with. Then, add to it that none of the top guys are fighting each other. So that leaves the top few guys to fight B level guys, which doesn't interest the fans.

I think jonibek looks flat lately cuz he needs to be challenged. A fighter at elite level which will energize jonibek. Then we'll know for sure where he's at.

the talent pool in boxing altogether is weak these days. It's a rare weight class that has more than 2 good fighters, and they won't fight each other. Back in the day, the money wasn't as good. The best literally had to fight the best to make the most money. Nowadays it's all eyeball test.

Yeah it's weak. I guess Charlo is still around.. maybe.
I'd like to see Troy Isley up there in a year or two to give the division some life. Eric Priest is from Kansas so I want him to do well.
However, this division boasts the best defensive boxer going right now. It's the super slick Marquis Taylor whom nobody talks about.

              It's fairly weak

On a side note I disagree about lara making improvements and hitting harder. His level of opposition has dropped in class

This division was never the same after they brought in SMW. They need to merge the 2 say
at 165 because right now it’s a wasteland in both divisions.

of course that will never happen.

Not true. Boxing is the most political sport in the world. Watch the fighters fight instead of just reading articles about them. Too many fans confuse great fighters with famous fighters. All divisions are as stacked with talent as ever. All it takes is for the unknown guys to get their chance.

Jermell should forget about 154 and come back at 160. Adames would love to defend the wbc against him. Winner unifies with lara/Danny winner
