first off... if you read the quote from Shaeffer, it says maybe in a few years the fight would happen. That still gives plenty of time for all the fights everyone wants to see from Mayweather, before Alvarez.

Secondly, Shaeffer is not the boss of Floyd. They are business partners. Ultimately, I believe it is Floyd, with the help of some advisors, that picks his opponents, and Alvarez is not on his radar. Floyd only fights big names. Alvarez isn't a big enough name yet.. And that's why dumbass Shaeffer said "maybe in a few years"

Floyd Mayweather, A Joke Of A Fighter, Contemplates Fighting A 19-Year-Old Prospect
          by TIM-STARKS on OCTOBER 15, 2009

Every time anyone is critical of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. for his opponent selection, one of his cult members comes out and says, “Be patient. He’ll fight [Insert Actual Feasible Opponent Here] next.”

So how do you explain this one, cultists? How do you explain Mayweather’s promoter, Golden Boy boss Richard Schaefer, talking about him fighting a 19-year-old welterweight prospect named Saul Alvarez?

Keep in mind: Mayweather has already said he won’t “wait around” for the winner of Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto Nov. 14. He has said he is “not ready” to step into the ring with Shane Mosley. His trainer Roger Mayweather has dismissed the idea of fighting Paul Williams. Really, those are the only acceptable opponents for Jr. right now.

But did anybody think he would sink so low as fighting an unproven 19-year-old? I joked about him probably fighting Alfonso Gomez next, but at least Gomez has won a couple real fights. Alvarez is a promising prospect, and he does draw a crowd, but how can anyone — even the most delusional followers of Mayweather — take this seriously?

I can already anticipate the responses from the Mayweather crowd: “But he’ll make so much money fighting Alvarez in Mexico.” Or: “Mayweather can’t do anything right according to his critics. Everybody said he should fight a welterweight, and now he’s fighting a welterweight, so what more do you want from him?” You people — you’re hilarious.

Mayweather is a joke. He’s not a real fighter. He’s some kind of boxing exhibition performer, but he should not and cannot be held in any esteem for his guts. None. He ought be ashamed of himself, as should his promoter for even floating this trial balloon, but Mayweather’s career for the last six years has, for the most part, been an exercise in shamelessness. The joke would be offensive if it wasn’t so funny because of how audacious a sham Mayweather is

Floyd Mayweather Jr. may have lost his mind

After Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated a clearly overmatched Juan Manuel Marquez there were three names that came to mind as future opponents for "Money." The names were welterweight mainstay "Sugar" Shane Mosley, current pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao and the man who will face Pacquiao on November 14th Miguel Cotto.

One thing that all three of those potential opponents have in common is that they're all elite fighters. That common thread is a problem for Mayweather who (as I've said in the past) tends to shy away from elite opponents who share a weight class with him.

Well it appears that there is a new name that you can add to the list of potential 2010 opponents for the "Pretty Boy" and that name is none other then Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

              [wait for it...]

              Wait, what?

That's right "Money" supporters according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer a dark horse has shown up on the Mayweather radar in the form of Mexico's favorite red headed son, Saul Alvarez (29-0-1, 22 KO's). Schaefer spoke with the great Mark Vester at BoxingScene.com and said: "There is a young fighter, 19-years-old. All of Mexico is talking about him. And he is filling up 10,000 people in venues in Mexico. He is fighting at 147; he's undefeated. He's a red head, a red head Mexican. They call him 'Canelo,' cinnamon head - Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. He would like nothing better than to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. You put Saul Alvarez in with Floyd Mayweather and you put it in Aztec Stadium - you sell 100,000 tickets. The guy [Alvarez] on his own sells 10 to 20,000 tickets. Floyd Mayweather is a big event fighter."

Alvarez is a nice fighter -- and one day maybe he'll be at a level where an elite welterweight should give him a chance and get in the ring with him. But, at 19 years old he is still fighting guys who have regular day jobs. Under no circumstance is Saul Alvarez in the same league as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the fact that this name is even being floated out there is embarassing to Floyd and insulting to his fans.

Now this story could be complete BS. Schaefer may be trying to talk up a fighter as a potential Mayweather opponent so that he can make a fight with Alvarez down the road seem more important. However even if this is grandstanding by Schaefer the fact that the story seems so legitimate is proof positive that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has a certain reputation with fans and media alike.

It behooves Schaefer to make a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. But what he should be doing is calling Floyd every morning and just saying "Shane Mosley" and nothing else. If Floyd won't fight Shane (who he called a "jealous steroid user") then Schaefer needs to find someone else for Floyd to fight that makes sense. You can't deny that Floyd puts up big numbers, which makes people like Richard Schaefer a lot of money. Schaefer doesn't promoter either Cotto or Pacquiao so he doesn't have the same leverage as Bob Arum had when negotiating the "Firepower" event for November. Instead Schaefer is trying to entice Floyd with a fight that Floyd normally feasts on -- namely a low risk opponent, who will sell tickets and draw fans (read: money).

At first this story seemed so outlandish that I figured it was written by The Onion, but does it really seem that far off? Mayweather-Alvarez would do big numbers in Mexico, it would sell on PPV because everything Floyd does sells on PPV, and it would be a certain victory (way to protect his undefeated record) for Floyd which is all he is interested in anyways.

So please -- Floyd defenders come to his aid here because even the most ardent Floyd fan must find this story hard to stomach.

Why does Golden boy want to ruin a great prospect is beyond me. Oscar deserves to be jinxed for even thinking about this fight.

I went back and looked at the article... you are right. It was the author, not Shaeffer that said "maybe in a few years"..

Shaeffer said exactly what you said... wow

Well, regardless, my second point mostly applies. Shaeffer doesn't speak for Floyd, and Alvarez isn't a big enough name yet for PPV numbers, live gate might do well, but not PPV.

And PPV is all Floyd thinks about.
