Just curious, is this standard in boxing? Is there a written rule on this?

10% is standard for most fighters. At the highest level though, things are sometimes different. If Canelo or AJ decided to hire a new trainer, it's more likely they pay them a flat fee.

Breadman wrote about it a few months back. The attitude is if you train a kid from nothing up to world champ, then you should continue getting 10% once he's earning millions because you put in all those years of hard work, taking low pay, so should get the big money rewards once the fighter does. But if a fighter is already at the top of the sport and hires a new trainer, it's more likely there will be a negotiation.

It's a hit and miss thing. If one of the guys you are training becomes a superstar, then it's like winning the lottery. It also depends on the boxer and his relationship with the trainer, whether he feels he could hang in there long-term, or feels getting shafted financially when he elevates to superstar status. Canelo and Reynoso is a shining example of trainer/boxer with good working relationship.

Ten percent is nothing if the boxer is still earning crumbs. It becomes huge if you're able to hang in there with stars like Fury, for instance. That is if this 10% cut exists at all, or it's a case by case arrangement.

            I agree with it.

Guys who skrimp on their trainers are scumbags.

Nobody's more in the trenches with you than your trainer.

Trainer would have to earn that 10% over time. Zero chance I'm paying 10% on top of the managerial fee, lawyer fees, training camp, taxes, etc.

              Just no.

a longtime trainer is the only one who takes defeat alongside the fighter

And many coaches are second father figures

Strongest fighter trainer tie today is Tank and his trainer

they gave each other purpose which kept them on the straight and narrow path
