Murray-Thaxton fight: Lesson for Audley Harrison

John Murray’s vacant British lightweight title fight with Jon Thaxton threw up a bit of personal synergy due to the fact that it came the night after Audley Harrison won Prizefighter: The Heavyweights III tournament. I invested heavily in Audley when he turned pro back in 2001, believing he would go all the way to the undisputed world title. Many people disagreed with that pick; still, I have fond memories of Big Aud’s early contests against mediocre Europeans, horizontal Americans and the smallest heavyweights Britain had to offer. Good article.

I hope Murray is matched well. I felt like Murray-Thaxton should've happened sooner, and having JT take those 2 fights (which he lost) proved to be a mistake because they lowered his stock a fair bit, so that by the time the fight was arranged the result seemed a foregone conclusion to many people.

I'd like to see Murray matched against one of the fringe contenders from across the pond. An opponent like David Diaz will be a good indicator if John can step up to the next level.

I'm not sold on Johnson, and it's a shame that he didn't end up facing Solis or someone of similar quality, because he is going into the Vitali fight with a very thin resume.
