You don't have to be "under contract". In certain points of their careers Mikey Garcia and Canelo weren't under contract with Al but still raved about his business acumen and how they were willing to work with him in the future because he didn't try and screw them because they werent "under contract"

I don't understand why or how people are fans of promoters and promotion companies. I couldn't give a **** about any of them. I'm a boxing fan , all I care about is good fighters putting on good fights. I don't care about their race , religion, country of citizenship, sexual orientation, who their promoter is , or anything other than does the dude prepare himself like a professional to give the best performance that he can. If he half asses it , cheats , or fights in boring manner , then I don't like them. If the opposite is true, then I like them. Being fans or haters of promoters is just weird to me.
