the reason many 3rd and 4th generations Chicanos don't speak spanish is simple.

Our parents, when they went to school in the 50s and 60s, were slapped silly for speaking spanish. Moving forward onto us, their children, oftentimes they thought it would be the same way. They didn't want us to have to go through that so we were primarily taught english.


Not being able to speak a language doesn't make someone less proud of their heritage or ancestry. It makes them a victim of circumstance.

from what i see in this article is something i have posted before.
he is telling the truth . if your mexican american your pretty much screwed in a way of trying to figure out who you are. if your like me and are first generation born here in the u.s., you are pretty close to mexico and the state where your parents are from, but go to the u.s. mex border and tell the mexican guard that your mexican and see what he tells you. i said im mexican, he says, no your american. we argued for a while till my dad told me to shut up. but the truth is, mexicans born in the u.s. are considered american just of mexican (decsent).
