  • Comments Thread For: Tank, Benavidez and the Ongoing Search for a Post-Floyd American Boxing Superstar

Oscar De La Hoya made it so easy. On his way out the door, as his physical capability faded, he transferred the gift that is truly the last thing to go for top fighters -- not the punching power, as the cliche mistakenly states, but rather the earning power -- directly to boxing's next two superstars.

Forget just American, Boxing is looking for a true superstar period. Nobody has captivated and really drawn the same level of interest after Floyd and pac’s peaks ended. Main reason is that nobody is consistently making the best fights available. This era is filled with too much risk management boxers instead of boxers actually chasing greatness.

You can say Trinidad and Cotto were big stars, I don't think you can say the same about Matias, Yet, anyways,

I disagree with the premise that anyone hands off the earning power or superstardom. It's organic , either you've that " it factor" or you don't. It's not something that there's a formula for though there are ingredients. Floyd got there because he was polarizing , he learned from Wrasslin to play a " Heel Character" , being talented and undefeated didn't hurt , but lots of people watched hoping to see him lose. The money spends the same if they love you or hate you.
Exciting fights , power, and heart are three ingredients. Charisma is another .It helps if a guy is a little vulnerable in the ring , one of the most exciting things about boxing is seeing someone overcome adversity, being tested and passing the test. It's a lot harder these days to become a star from boxing because people have to go looking for you. They practically have to already be a boxing fan to even know anything about you. In a lot of ways , boxing has done it to itself by being shortsighted and greedy. Hiding fights on subscription services and PPV. Even in the HBO and Showtime days , HBO and Showtime were popular, most people had at least one if not both. How many people have DAZN or Prime Video ?

I agree , people who didn't follow boxing knew the names of Trinidad and Cotto.

                    He ticks literally every box.

Marketable, good, look and well spoken and has some personality.
                    American/Mexican
                    High level fighter
                    Very exciting fighter
                    Young.
                    Very dedicated.
                    Throw back fighter

Whats missing ? He ticks more boxes than Tank Davis who is not very marketable, with his personality and being a midget. David would explode if Canelo gave him that fight and he beat his ass.
