  • Comments Thread For: Wide Decision Another Step Forward For Xander Zayas

At 21, Xander Zayas doesn't have to fight like a world champion at this point in his career. What he accomplished Saturday night by effectively pitching a shutout on a former world champion, by filling the Madison Square Garden Theater on a New York holiday weekend and by flashing his aggression and precision in an abundance of spots was encouraging.

Yeah, he is skilled and has a lot of upside potential.
I wish the ESPN hype machine (read: Tessitore) would ease off the suggestions Xayas is following the footsteps of ATGs like Trinidad.
Trinidad would have smoked Teixeira last night.

Well, Zayas is fighting better competition than Trinidad was fighting at this point in his career. In Trinidads 18th fight he fought a guy who was 4-7 and in his 19th fight a guy who was 7-2. Do I like comparing Zayas to Trinidad at this point, No, but that's because we know what Trinidad accomplished later in his career.

Fair enough, but the comparisons aren't valid (yet), in my opinion.

Hey, if Xayas turns into the second coming of Trinidad, nobody would be more thrilled than Left Hook Louie here.
But we'll find out eventually, right?

He’s only 21. TR would be fools to rush him. They need to let all the leading contenders in his division fight each other. For example, Spence is finished, Fondora will move up in weight, Tank is too much for him at this stage, etc. Let him fight second tier contenders to get valuable experience before throwing him to the wolves.

Sky sports showed the fight live and is now available on YouTube via sky sports that means it was a crap fight not even watched yet

Awful fights. Pure showcase the up and coming fighter against terrible comp. If a promoter is going to put a showcase fight on the undercard of some real fights ok. But Texiera isn't a shell of what he used to be, he is a husk. Speed totally gone, zero pop, he wasn't trying to win, he was there for a paycheck.

Zayas has potential, but his power is nothing special and his skills aren't elite. He is solid but is going to get beat up against high level punchers imo. The amount of "please make this kid the next star" hype is cringe, and likely bad for Zayas. When Tyszu or someone at that level stops him, it may be hard for him to take mentally. Kid needs a real challenge now, he has 19 fights against really bad and old guys.

                    I agree with you.

It sucks that Top Rank uses the ESPN platform just to put on mostly low risk showcase fights.
