They did it to see if he can at least make 156. If he makes weight comfortably without struggling then they can bring him down to 154. If he struggled to make 156, then he would move up to 160.

        Great consolation prize considering.

Also not convinced Ortiz makes weight. He has failed to make the 154 limit in both of his fights in the division so far.
You're joking, right? Why would anybody care whether these phony belts are involved?

Because they could end up delaying further unifications down the line, obviously.

If Bohachuk or Ortiz were to become WBA/WBC interim champion he might be able to cut in line to stop a potential unification between the Crawford/Madrimov winner and the Spence/Fundora winner. Or a potential unification of either guy with Murtazaliev.

Bohachuk has already been passed over twice, at some point the WBC will give him his shot. I just hope it's later. He was supposed to fight Fundora for the vacant WBC but instead Fundora fought Tszyu and he fought Mendoza for the interim. And then instead of ordering a consolidation between the champion and interim champion the WBC let Fundora fight Spence next.

What a pleasant surprise. I thought he was going to fight some part time door dasher. This is great!

This will do nicely as a replacement. I hope that it's on the August 3rd card , but if not , it's a decent headliner if they put a strong undercard with it.

That’s all true but the fact that a lane, manufactured 156-pound catchweight even had to be conjured up suggests Ortiz didn’t really want to make much of an effort to fight at the traditional 154 weight.

All in all, this is a “so what” fight after the Tszyu withdrawal. I’d have preferred Ortiz to just sit a few extra months and go straight into a Spence fight.

This guy Vergil was on a steady climb and suddenly vanished from the big picture.

What happened to that guy? 21 wins, 21 KOs and nowhere mentioned with the Jaron's and Crawford's anymore. Not even the Benn's
