Comments Thread For: Canelo Alvarez Set To Relinquish IBF Title, No Longer Undisputed Champion

for the life of me I dont understand the hate for the IBF. To become a mandatory, you must fight a #1 or #2 eliminator. They dont just "appoint" fighters as mandos depending on who hands them the fattest envelope, like the WBC and WBA do. And its not their fault that Benevidez went the WBC route. Benevidez is the WBC interim champ, so no other organizations will bother ranking him, because its pointless. He's not going to fight an IBF eliminator, or a WBO fight, or whatever. So anyone besides the WBC ranking him is just wasting their time.
No "system" is going to be perfect. But the IBF system of making sure anyone who follows the rules ultimately gets a shot, well thats currently the best way to handle it. Otherwise non-marketable fighters would never get their shot, unless they were willing to fight for crumbs. The mando route at least ensures that they are treated fairly......drablj likes this.

Those happy with the IBF need to express their enthusiasm about the Scully fight in the first place. NOBODY wanted to see that crap.

Then the super middleweight division would explode with several interesting, and competitive fights between deserving fighters.Boricua181 likes this.

so what fight do you thing actually COULD BE MADE for the IBF title? Its easy to complain about it, but offer no solutions. Lets look at the top 10 at 168 on Boxrec.....
1. Alvarez
2. Benevidez - holds WBC interim, and has fight scheduled with Gvozdyk at 175.
3. Mungia - just fought alvarez
4. Mbilli - fight scheduled in august with derevyanchenko
5. Berlanga - everyone already complains about this possibility
6. Morrell - fighting hot rod in august for vacant WBA 175 title
7. Sadjo - frenchman that nobody has heard of
8. Andrade - next to impossible to make fights with
9. Diego Pacheco - has minor titles from wbc and wbo, not likely to fight for IBF
10. Iglasias - fight scheduled with shvedenko
So what exactly should the IBF do? Call the mando for the guy who fought the eliminator 2 years ago, or just wait around for Canelo to pick someone at random and collect a fee?
The good thing is that of course Canelo wont do the fight, so Scull will fight Vladimir Shishkin for the vacant title. Shishkin will likely win, and then maybe defend vs the Mbilli vs Derevyanchenko winner......Last edited by OnePunch; 05-28-2024, 09:34 PM.

Nobody will pay for a Scully vs Canelo fight-everyone will financially lose EXCEPT for the IBF and maybe Scully. How can any promoter attempt to promote this with a straight face? Canelo already made history being the only man to become undisputed in SMW anyways, so who cares. Berlanga fight seems more juicy than a guy like Scully-and that's bad.
I agree that Canelo should dump the belt. I would go a step further and say that he should dump ALL his belts. He is at the level where belts simply don't matter anymore. His economic clout is what will attract his opponents, not his titles. So let the next generation of guys fight for them, and make names for themselves.

This is called the sport of Boxing, not the sport of Canelo, he's not fighting the best fighters in the division, so what is he really the champion of?
In his last fight he fought a fighter who ducked, and cherry picked opponents for years.
Canelo, and Munguia could've given the fans of boxing around the world the best match ups available, but they chose not to.
The boxing organizations are so corrupt that they pick, and choose who to enforce their rules on.
To make matters even worse they make up fictitious titles such as the Franchise Champion, the Champion in Recess, and Interim Champion.
The proliferation of titles in the sport of boxing has in itself made a mockery of what it means to be a world champion.
According to the organizations that run boxing, there are 4 different worlds, the WBC, the WBA, the IBF, and the WBO, it is corruption at it's worst.
Being a champion in boxing doesn't mean as much as it used to mean back in the day.
