  • Unwanted Johnson Hopes to crash Dawson's Hartford Party

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Chad Dawson is throwing a house party next month in Hartford.

But to hear Glen Johnson tell it, his was the last name on the guest list.

“This is not the fight Dawson wanted,” the affable 40-year-old said. “He was pushed into it by HBO. They gave him two names – Bernard Hopkins and Glen Johnson – and we all know Bernard doesn’t want to fight anyone these days. So that left them with me.

“And after they realized I wasn’t going to make it difficult to get the thing done, they turned it around to sell it like it was the fight they wanted all along. They can say that, but I know how it works and I know the truth. He didn’t want me.”

Such is the tenor of conversation with Johnson whenever Dawson is the topic.

The two met for the first time 18 months ago in Tampa, where Dawson retained his WBC light heavyweight championship for the third time with a controversial unanimous decision that was greeted with jeers from the St. Pete Times Forum crowd. [details]

Chad wins easier this time. He's not going to fall into fighting Johnson's fight this time. It will probably be a lot more boring.

            Dawson lives in Hartford????

I seriously doubt he lives within the Hartford limits considering the amount of empty buildings there. West Hartford maybe but that's a different town altogether.

BPP could you provide proof. I'll look him up if I know what part of town he's in.

****** poster alert! ****** poster alert!

Since kessler is such a badass, can you tell me how many top 10 guys he's fought in his division since the calzAghe fight?

I like kessler, but let's face it, his comp hasn't been all that great. You should say someone like froch who is facing top guys every time out dumbass!

He lives in New Haven (or at least claims it as his hometown, though he spends more time in Vegas, where he stays for training camp). It's not exactly his hometown, but it's a shorter and faster drive for Dawson than will be Johnson's flight from Miami.

Anyway, his latter point was far more indicative of the way of the sport - it's still a Shaw-promoted show, which makes Dawson the house fighter, regardless of the arena.

That said, I agree with those who expect Chad to legitimately win more comfortable than was the case 18 months ago.

He actually lives in a small (nice) Canton - suburb not to far from Hartford.

                    Are you from the area?
