You pick your opponents by yourself
Can NBA team in basketball choose who they play next?
Can a tennis player in Wimbledon choose who he plays next?
Can a table tennis player choose who he plays next?

Yep. Only in boxing doe, only in boxing.
A boxer can even scrap an already scheduled mandatory fight and go for a "retirement fight."
Which means the said boxer has no confidence in making such money for the rest of his career
even though he's still in his prime. Then he goes into the retirement fight only to survive and not even try to win.
