Vanes had a good amateur pedigree and was an Olympian - this was probably part of their thought process to allow the fight. Also lets have it right, he dropped Andrade and in a lot of people's opinion probably beat him as well

The article was not Raskin's best work-- what if? stories aren't that valuable unless you're actually writing a novel or making a film. As journalistic work, eh. What he points out is still a good nugget of historical information tho, I remember not understanding why it happened, maybe that's where Raskin should have dived into.
