Comments Thread For: Xander Zayas to Face Patrick Teixeira on Puerto Rican Day Weekend in New York

Xander Zayas will fulfill a dream when he headlines the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York this summer. Zayas will take on Brazilian former world titleholder Patrick Teixeira in a 10-round clash on June 8 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The fight will signal the announcement of Zayas as a main-event fighter and the potential start of a long run of fighting on the weekend of New York's Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Dam boy give em some time. Lol. He's only 21 on the verge of being a solid contender if he can pull off a win against a former champ. He is clearly being groomed to be the heir apparent to the PR throne and they're moving him carefully. He definitely has the skills and the character to be that guy. Since Verdejo basically threw it all away, he is the closest thing atm to being the next big star from PR since Cotto retired. But he has a long way to go to reach the status of those legends from the island if he eventually does get there. Only time will tell.

For some reason he’s not been marketed as PR or to the PR fanbase.

Matias is a top guy and a world champion with a highly entertaining style to watch, but he hasn't been promoted as well and doesn't seem to possess the charisma that Zayas displays in and out of the ring that appeals to the people of PR. On top of that, Matias is already 32 while Zayas is barely 21. Zayas just seems to be a more marketable fighter at his age(at least from what I've seen) despite Matias being the more accomplished and more proven fighter. Might be too late for Matias to reach those heights, but he can still be a solid draw IMO. All in all, both are great to watch and hopefully someone can take the crown for the island soon. It's been too long already.

Patrick Texiera was literally a world champion a few years back after he beat Carlos Adames for the tile but ok

That win over Adames looks pretty good on Texiera’s resume and he’s fought in multiple championship fights. Go step up fight for Zayas at this stage of his career.
