Saw De La Hoya's documentary (at least part 1 of it so far) and after he switched from his trainer who trained fighters from an amateur style to Mexico's Jesus Rivero known as "El Professor" after Oscar had struggled with a prime and game John John Molina.
Rivero who had trained the 1960s Flyweight Champion Miguel Canto from the beginning, had retired in 1970s until he was contacted by Oscar's managers. He trained the Golden Boy for 2-3 years from his fight with Rafael Ruelas to fighting Pernell Whitaker. After Oscar had gained more fame, he decided to train under Emmanuel Steward instead.

Before switching trainers, Oscar's defensive fundamentals had improved drastically. He went from backpedaling, blocking and parrying with his high guard to also applying mobile footwork utilizing angles, plus waist and head movement to slip punches.
So now about Ryan Garcia, he had only fought under the tutelage of Derrick James for one fight since May 2023. Same fighter who brought up likely Hall Of Famer Errol Spence Jr after he switched from Gene Vivero from South Texas. Well accomplished and Former undisputed champion Jermell Charlo, Temporarily Anthony Joshua and is also currently training Frank Martin.
James had mentioned that after he departed with Spence, he won't train anyone else and will retire. He might be able to formulate the appropriate gameplan and sparring set up in his gym for Ryan to fight Devin Haney in April 20, but it depends on Ryan to execute it.
Can Derrick James improve Garcia odds on beating such a complete, tested and physically big fighter in Devin Haney? Ryan's specialty was counter pulling and landing a left hook under Reynoso against shorter ranged fighters. Under Joe Goosen he became a fighter that knows how to apply pressure by matching his opponent's foot placement, varying his shots from head to body, make better use of his guard and throw more combinations, but he still was susceptible of getting caught.

In his fight with Oscar Duarte, Ryan did not impress the public until he knocked out the strong limited brawler and utilized a horrible version of the Philly shell that he was not advised to actually use in the fight by his trainer as he used it frequently for sparring.
About the bout in April 20. Garcia has a lot of deficiencies, even if plenty are covered, he might likely lose the fight if he tries to box the much better boxer, though there are some things to consider, while Devin is the much better boxer, he is not renowned for his power, nor is he unhittable even against shorter fighters. He will be susceptible to a well-timed left hook (which Tank got hit multiple times before and after the knockdown rewatching the fight).
Though will likely persevere with his durability and excessive clinches. He can also recoup by creating distance with his ring IQ.
Jorge Linares was highly competitive because his glass chin was not in danger of getting dented and if Ryan is active/aggressive enough with his explosive handspeed, he might create some opportunities to turn the tides. Just can't see Haney losing though after Ryan's weird antics, his recent loss which Haney can observe and the difference in resume.
