Comments Thread For: Saudi Arabia's Next Step to Succeed Las Vegas: a Tyson-Endorsed Gym

Like the Kronk, the Summit at Big Bear and the Wild Card Boxing club, Mike Tyson's new gym could become the next in a long line of classic training destinations - and the key to fully opening Saudi Arabia as the next great boxing market.

They can burn all the money they want, they will never have the history, culture with the sport and atmosphere that Vegas, New York, the UK etc does.

“Boxing is not a mainstream sport,” Abdullah said. “There are two names people know, Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. "
            Disrespectful.

            'Sugar' Ray Leonard
            'Sugar' Ray Robinson
            Tommy 'Hitman' Hearns
            'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler
            Evander 'Real Deal' Holyfield
            Arturo Gatti
            Hector 'Macho' Camacho
            Julio Caesar Chavez
            Oscar De La Hoya
            'Smokin' Joe Frazier
            George Foreman
            Roy Jones Jr.
            Lennox Lewis
            Larry Holmes
            Rid**** Bowe
            Antonio Tarver
            Pernell 'Sweet Pea" Whitaker
            James 'Lights Out' Toney

Etc etc etc. There are tons of mainstream fighters of the past whose name is recognized even in the modern day.

These names are reognised within boxing. Some of them would be recognised outside boxing, but I doubt half of them would be known by a random casual sports fan in the street today. Foreman by far would be the best known name on the list.. and it would mainly be from his grill. Like it or not, boxing has become a niche sport.

Ali and Tyson are known like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods or Pele -- they transcended their sports to be known by everyone; they are truly famous in a generation-crossing way that Camacho, Bowe or Toney simply are not. It's not disrespectful to describe reality.

No matter how much oil money the Saudi’s pour into boxing, they will never be able to white-wash their history of human rights violations and their treating of women as second class citizens.

The Saudi’s lack of atmosphere at their boxing events will never raise to the level of excitement in New York or Las Vegas. The atmosphere there can be compared to a class outing at the museum.

Mike, get what you can before the Cabbage Patch Doll euphoria goes away and the Saudi’s finally figure out that they’re competing against themselves.

They will love him til they don't. Then he will be trumped up on weed charges and beheaded as the undercard to Fury/Joshua....somewhere around 2027.
