  • About Canelo

Saul Alvarez will turn 34 in July. He is 60-2. Forbes estimates his net worth at a minimum of 275 million. The pressure seems to be mounting for Canelo to finally give Benavidez a shot. It appears he wants no part of it. Alvarez has fought some big fights, despite what anyone says. His motivation and desire to fight the big fights looks to be understandably winding down. I’d be surprised at this point if Canelo bends to pressure and agrees to a match with Benavidez. It looks like he’s preparing for retirement. Just a few more non-threatening defenses. If Alvarez finally takes Benny’s challenge, he’s even more of a warrior than I already give him credit for. Just my take.

I think eventually he will take that fight.

Because of his champion’s heart? The payday? Or something else?

I think ultimately Canelo wants the best fights, he knows that's the best fight to make and the people want to see it.

        I'm optimistic it happens.

All right, cool. I hope you’re right. Could be the last big one Canelo takes on.

He’s proven everthing he needed to prove. If Benividas would have fought him 6-7 years ago Canelo would have whipped him but back then Benividas wasn’t trying to fight him. I don’t say Benividas was a coward though. He WASNT at his peak and he also would have had to come down to 160 to fight him. Both bad ideas. Same rings true for Canelo fighting Benividas now.
I think Canelo WILL FIGHT Benividas before he retires. He will wait for Benividas to go up to 175 and if Canelo whips him all will say he dehydrated him and put in a dehydration clause. Cause he will do BOTH those things. Best they both do their own thing. Canelo is far past his prime and NOT at his best performing weight.

Good post. Totally agree that Canelo has nothing to prove — to anyone but himself, that is. He’s a champion, so he might buckle to demands. But all the coward talk, even by Mike Tyson, is silly.

benny is his mando for years, its the best fight to make for him interest wise, the time to make it is now, marination is hopeless for the most part & it often means fights past sell by date, no excuses, if u make excuses for canelo u have to make them for everyone

I don't think Canelo fights Benavidez for one simple reason: The age gap between him and Benavidez is the same as the age gap between him and Golovkin, in reverse. Seven years.

That's all good but as has been said repeatedly, it's overdue the WBC, WBA and IBF started calling their mandatories.
