Morrell Says Berlanga Would Take Him “One Round”

Last night I ran across a little interview with David Morrell that was conducted ringside at the Edgar Berlanga fight. The audio was bad — the crowd was drowning out much of the questions and answers — but David was clear when the interviewer asked him about Berlanga. He said it would take him “one round” to dispatch Edgar. That may be a little bravado, although Morrell seemed quite confident, but I can see him taking Berlanga out by the fifth round.

Can Morrell please get back in the ring? I know he fought only two months ago, but it was only TWO rounds. I feel like I see guys like Morrell and Ennis outside of the ring more than inside the ring lol

Also, the degrees of separation between Hearn and Morrell/Ennis is so small. Hearn should be trying to cultivate a relationship with them, even if he doesn't plan on doing immediate business with them. I think Hearn has gotten the reputation or a "slave-master" or some British invader that many American fighters have already been conditioned to be wary of him. He needs to shatter those preconceptions.

Mike Tyson fought 15 times in 1985 and 13 times in 1986. It’s pathetic what the sport of boxing has devolved into. I don’t expect the top guys to fight nearly as much as young Tyson did, but c’mon. I think four times a year is good for a guy like Morrell, whose fights don’t tend to last very long. And you’re right, if you go two rounds in your last engagement, you really ought to be getting in there again fairly quickly.

I understand that training camps cost $$$ and can be physically and psychologically grueling, but if Morrell wants to ascend faster...he needs to be a consummate athlete and make sacrifices where he can. If Andy Cruz finds himself to a title shot before Morrell reaches the next plateau of his career, that is a sign that something is very wrong.

You can fight every month against Cans, but you can't when the opponents are quality, today it's mainly about a lack of money and shows, it's a bad economic climate all over the world.

If Berlanga gets a Canelo payday, you have to respect the hustle really, because he’s nowhere near that level. I think other rising stars in the division like Pacheco, Mbilli, Melekuziev etc would all stop him too.

I hear you, but guys gotta sign on the dotted line. Lots of guys, from Mbilli to Benavidez, have been turning down fights with him.

Agreed. Today’s athletes are being dumbed down to the point where, sooner rather than later, the sport will collapse. On a general scale, skills can’t help but erode. Fighters are being asked to fight less and less, against inferior opposition. Morrell has some real ability. It would be a disgrace if allowed to fade.

I got a feeling Munguia will be the next Canelo opponent, Berlanga is a big step backwards for Canelo.

If Berlanga gets that fight, good for him — bad for the sport, but good on him. And I agree: any real, live body might take him down. Morrell would be a nightmare.
