I honestly don’t think Canelo is the biggest issue. It’s that the rest of the guys are ducking each other. Paulie really said it best. These guys need to stop waiting for Alvarez and make some matchups against one another in the interim.

Benavidez beat both Plant and Andrade @ 168! If Canelo turns down $55 million, then you know HE'S THE PROBLEM!!!

This is the consequence of all the attention/money revolving around one fighter. The cash-cow has an extraordinary amount of responsibility for the health of boxing, so Canelo will get an extraordinary amount of criticism. What fans don't like to acknowledge.....Benavidez would strategize just like Canelo if he wielded the same power. Think about who Benavidez has fought: Lemiuex, a former MW slugger. Andrade, a pure boxer campaigning at his 3rd weight. Plant, a pure boxer whom Canelo already KO'ed. Who did Benavidez want to fight? Munguia, a slugger campaigning at his 3rd weight...and Jermall Charlo, a basket-case campaigning at his 3rd weight. Who is Benavidez NOT fighting? David Morrell, a boxer-puncher and Christian Mbilli, a stocky pressure-fighter. Benavidez's team is carefully choosing his opponents, and he's gotten away with it because the spotlight is all on Canelo. The contenders aren't scrutinized nearly as much as the titlists.

              This is the right answer.

              Keef fought Swift and Porter.

Swift fought PRIME Khan, Keef, Porter, Spence, Guerrero, PRIME Peterson.

Porter fought Spence, Crawford, Swift, Keef, Porter, Broner, PRIME Brook, Berto, Paulie, etc etc etc.

Spence fought Crawford, Porter, PRIME Brook, PRIME Swift, Ugas, Peterson.

Broner fought Paulie, Porter, Chino, Manny.

Right now, you think about these undefeated guys. By waiting for Canelo, it just puts him over, because what happens if he takes their '0' one by one? NSB will say "well those guys didn't fight anybody" - but that's not Canelo's fault, that's theirs for waiting on the cash.

Look what happened to Billy Juice Saunders. NSB trashed him after he got his face smashed by Canelo because "he didn't fight anybody" - but that's Saunders' fault for sitting out after getting signature wins.

Look what happened with Andrade. Gets smashed by Benavidez, NSB calls Andrade a protected bum who got exposed. The truth is, Benavidez just outmuscled him, but Andrade was damn sure in the fight. Waiting so long to make the fight is why people think Andrade was protected. He wasn't. But he was never tested, either.

The other problem is when you have guys like Bum****a who SHOULDN'T be undefeated, talking about how they'd beat Canelo.

So no, it's not Canelo's fault. Everyone else is doing it wrong because they're afraid of taking an L and costing themselves that opportunity. But if you go down swinging and you build your profile, you might still get the call.

Look at John Ryder - he got the call despite multiple L's and to this day ("TILL THIS DAY!") remains one of the very few fighters to give Canelo problems in the ring.

Are we to NOT complain, if Canelo fights Jermall Charlo? Should the WBC allow Canelo to fight Crawford, a WW, right after he fought Jermall Charlo, a SWW, in back-to-back fights, AND STILL KEEP THE WBC TITLE????

Paulie makes great points. It’s an issue with the sport as a whole.

Everyone criticizes Canelo for not fighting Benavidez. Why is Canelo not taking that fight? it’s because he probably loses to Benavidez. So shame on Canelo for not fighting Benavidez, right? Okay, so that fight is not happening, let’s move onto the next best thing and see Benavidez versus Morrell. Oh wait…. Benavidez won’t want that one because Morrell probably beats him. So the cycle continues.

The biggest issue is the rankings. Canelo should not hold ANY belts as long as he isn’t scheduled to fight Benavidez. None. Benavidez should be the number one contender in every sanctioning body. You take that fight, or you get stripped of all your belts, and then you can fight whoever the hell you want but don’t call it any type of a world championship fight. If Benavidez were to get the belts, he should have about 2-3 fights to get in there with Morrell or the same thing happens.

Canelo has two fights remaining on his promotional deal with PBC, which began with last September’s decision win over Jermell Charlo
By Patrick Stumberg Updated Feb 21, 2024, 5:35pm EST

With just over two months remaining until Canelo Alvarez’s next scheduled bout, there’s little indication of who will actually welcome the Mexican superstar back to the ring. Canelo recently insisted that he’d be facing an American, with The Ring naming Jermall Charlo as his opponent, but Charlo himself took to social media to deny that any negotiations took place.

Now, ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez reports that PBC is ready to pay Canelo’s (60-2-2, 39 KO) $35 million guarantee if he fights Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KO), but not if he insists on Charlo. The “other option,” Rodriguez claims, is Canelo pursuing options with other promoters.

Canelo signed a three-fight deal with Al Haymon and co. last year and intended to kick things off against Charlo, who ruled himself due to lack of preparation. Canelo instead fought his brother Jermell in September, dropping and dominating the former undisputed super welterweight champion over the course of twelve rounds.

Mauricio Sulaiman recent came out and said he’d enforce Canelo’s long-overdue mandatory defense against interim champion David Benavidez, but did not specify whether that applied to the May date. He is also Mauricio Sulaiman.

If he does not fight David Benavidez next, it’s as clear-cut a duck as you’re likely to see. That said, Munguia is an exponentially more appealing opponent than Charlo, who’s shown no desire to fulfill his responsibilities as middleweight champion or, frankly, fight a warm body. Pushing for Munguia over Charlo is the correct financial move on PBC’s part.

We’ll see how it plays out.
