  • Teddy Atlas TURNS HEEL, Agrees With NSB: UK Fighters, You're OVERRATED!!

This is fresh off of Conor Benn's lackluster performance.

It depends on the fighter. Ricky Hatton was far from overrated and you got guys like Eggington (who schooled Paulie, who's in this video, BTW) or Ted Cheeseman, who are warriors. Naseem Hamed who was the best at selling a fight and extremely skilled. Chris Eubank, one of the best to ever do it.

I don't think they're all overrated. I think certain ones are overhyped on the way in. Like Anthony Yarde. Skilled, but not enough to warrant the hype. Callum Smith - only ever smashed by top fighters.

I think Paulie made one good point - and I wish they'd brought up Eggington (the guy that retired him) because Eggington is an example of what COULD be. Because Eggington was given a chance to shine against a (declining) star in Paulie and knocked it out of the park.

Sometimes the UK guys don't get a chance to branch out if they don't have the right promotion behind them and sometimes, the promoters go nuts with guys that don't really deserve that hype in the first place.

But when you're a guy that's smashing hyped UK fighters left and right, you're gaining exposure to that crowd, and you're going to end up a star regardless. That's exactly why Canelo and Golovkin took the path they did and why it was brilliant.

That's why Crawford's popularity started to wane, because at one point he was willing to fight guys like Ricky Burns overseas, then refused to do it ever again; and his popularity has tanked ever since. Imagine if he went on a UK can crushing run at 140 before moving to 147, 4 fights for one year, then go to 147 and crush 3-4 more UK cans before fighting Horn. The dude would have been pulling 7 figure buys all the way up to the Spence fight because the UK fans would have been following this guy who just smashed their hopes.

Mayweather at least focused on Mexicans to build his up.

I dont think its they're "overrated" so much as the UK fanbase gets behind fighters and the UK is a relatively strong market for the sport commercially plus its an English speaking market too so there are more eyes on it internationally to judge (or hate).

Just watching the vid now and Paulie says something similar.

boxing fans are always looking for the next guy to support hoping they might be better than the last, u never really know until they go for the 4 top belts, like the belts or not but the best guys usually if not always have them, unification is next step if u are that level

He said UK fighters are overrated but that there are exceptions. Is he wrong?
Leicesterage Combat Talk Radio likes this.

If any fighters get overhyped it's US fighters. Americans get a disproportionate amount of exposure relative to what they achieve due to US media dominance. A lot of talk, very little action.

It's a meaningless statement one could make about any boxing nation, surely?

Benn isn't even rated in the UK and yet a hypejob like Gervonta Davis appears on US-generated P4P lists almost universally. Presumably due to the money he generates.

Atlas probably doesn't even know what cricket is. The guy just loves the sound of his own voice.
