  • Comments Thread For: Anthony Joshua Praises Ben Davison: "He Doesn't Try To Change Your Style"

Anthony Joshua seemed like a broken man. He ditched his original trainer, Rob McCracken, several years ago following a few lackluster performances. Since then, Joshua has been looking for answers. He traveled stateside and began looking at his options. When it was all said and done, he settled on Robert Garcia. That relationship, however, was transient, evaporating after just one fight, a loss to Oleksandr Usyk.

This comment, that I've heard before from AJ about Ben, feels like more of diss to Robert & Derrick than hyping Ben.

And just logically it doesn't make a lot of sense to switch a guy up this late in his career. So I see why AJ talks about this like he does. AJ reached the top spot with all his flaws already. You don't gotta reinvent the wheel to get him back there & idek if you got the time to reinvent the wheel for AJ this late in his story.

Bens a good and often underrated coach and trying to change what Joshua is would be ******. Ben is Joshua's best chance in my opinion and will make for more excitement and give Joshua his best chance to cause an upset , but ultimately Joshua isn't good enough as he found out in his two losing attempts to Usyk and his brutal KO loss to Ruiz. Ben will give him his only chance of upsetting the odds but I won't be betting that way!

Kanye reinvented himself after Ruiz 1 but let's blame the coaches until he finds the right yes man.
He's beat up an ex sparring partner in Wallin unafraid of what's coming back because he can't punch & now an 0-1 novice Ngannou & Davidsons suddenly a da man??

It's called careful least risk for most reward match making, let's not get carried away.

AJ gotta realize that these trainers tried changing a little something because his old schtick wasn’t working anymore
Ben though , imo is one of those yes trainers which is totally wrong for him at this stage of his career

It's not like he has to forget everything he learnt from Garcia and James. If he can be a bit more defensively responsible against Zhang or Hgroviv but explosive when the opportunity arrives then he'll be the best version of himself that he can realistically be.

Interesting guy this Anthony Joshua. He has achieved a huge amount in his relatively short career and deserves respect for that. Trying different trainers is a risky move but also shows his ability for the unorthodox. Not many top boxers would have the courage to make those changes. However the trainers cant fix Joshua's psychological state of mind. That one punch by Ruiz onto the back of his head completely unraveled him. That was a terrible and shocking defeat. Joshua was belted from pillar to post afterwards and couldnt handle it. He quit in that fight. It was his 'no mas'. He is showing courage and commitment by continuing and attempting to seek redemption but that Ruiz defeat will haunt him and unfortunately define his career. The ugly body beating up the beautiful body. 1000 trainers cant fix that. Losing to Usyk twice is no great shame but Joshua was passive in those contests. Have to admire his desire to continue and trying out new things but the su****ion is that up against the top level fighters with heavy hands he would revert to being defensive.
