  • Comments Thread For: Lara-Zerafa: WBA Re-Orders Long Overdue Mandatory Middleweight Title Fight

Erislandy Lara is back on the hook to honor a long overdue mandatory title defense. BoxingScene.com has confirmed that the WBA has ordered Lara to next defend his middleweight title versus Australia's Michael Zerafa. Both parties were notified of the development on Monday via official letter, a copy of which was obtained by BoxingScene.com.

The key quote is below. Just strip for inactivity. It's bad enough having second rate/hasbeen fighters holding belts without them also being inactive with them.

Lara has not fought since May 2022

I don't think Lara was a 2nd rate fighter. I do agreed belts shouldn't be held hostage.

I like Danny Garcia - and Erislandy Lara - but this whole Lara vs Garcia fight at a catch weight for a belt was never a good look. If Danny wants to fight for a middleweight belt it should be at 160. And Zerafa's shot is long overdue. If he wants to take step aside money, that's up to him. But, this non-defending nonsense while keeping a belt (Lara, Jermall, etc) is ridiculous.

Types of fights Lara's manager, Luis DeCubas, wants for his guy. But Decubas wanted Danny Garcia first, and WBA agrees. Heck, some people even say Decubas is a WBA agent and fixer. He might even be the one who came up with those rankings which were all tailor-made for Lara.

Danny Garcia screwed it up by injecting himself in the mix. That made Decubas salivate and can't pass up such opportunity as Garcia got the more established name. And the Lara/Garcia was about to happen, but Showtime most likely didn't have the funds both camps were demanding. Zerafa can't take it anymore and about to take legal action.
