  • Saudi’s are creating their own title belt.

Was revealed at the AJ-Ngannou press conference, will likely be awarded to the Fury-Usyk winner.

Looks like it’ll just be a WBC special belt type thing for now but who knows. I suspect the ABC’s will be very worried. Imagine the Fury-Usyk winner denounces the 4 ABC belts and instead raises the Saudi created undisputed belt.

dan-b I remember you making a thread about the Saudi’s potentially buying one of the ABC’s. What are your thoughts on this?

I always thought that once all the belts were unified for undisputed it should be one belt, but who doesn't want to lug around all that hardware?

This is an excellent decision. It's Time to Get rid of the political belts.

As much as I’d love boxing to be a one belt per division sport again, I hate the idea of the Saudi’s controlling that one belt.
          dan-b dan-b likes this.

I'm all for anyone freezing sanctioning bodies and promoters out of the game if we have 1 champion per division and a sensible ranking system.

My initial thoughts are that it could create as many problems as it solves but is an interesting development.

It's a nice thought but although we use the term "unified" it's a bit of a misnomer as the fighter remains subject to different sets of rules, mandatories, etc.

You think a government running its own sanctioning body isn't political?

The plan has to be to be able to call the Fury/Usyk v AJ/Ngannou winner Undisputed with the belts fragmented.

They will be marketing it as Undisputed without all belts for sure. Doubt its a one off.

Maybe the winner will even be asked to drop the belts to help create competition following 2024.
Like it or not, they seem to have a long term plan...

Apparently the reason the Saudis wanted Lyndon Arthur as an opponent for Bivol was so they could promote it as a WBA-IBO "unification", so it's just as possible the Saudis cause more belts to be recognised, not fewer.

The Fury-Usyk winner will already be Undisputed. They’ll then defend the “Undisputed title” against the AJ-Ngannou winner.

By this point the IBF and maybe another one of the 3 will have stripped the newly crowned Undisputed champion. Will be very interesting to see whether they drop the other belts and simply defend the Saudi created Undisputed title. I could definitely see Fury doing it, not so sure about Usyk.
