Sam Peter is scheduled to fight Gilbert Martinez. What ****ing moron came up with that idea? He's already beaten opponents much superior to Martinez, so why ****in bother? It's not like he's shown much inclination to back down from tough comp before. If he just wants to mark time, he oughta be fighting comeone like Oleg Mazkaev, Kirk Johnson or Larry Donald. Damaged goods all of em, sure, but each more of a challenge than Gilbert ****in Martinez. This is like a bad joke.
Is His Management ******?

Ah, but it is. Martinez is a guy who should be retired. It's not as if he had any hope of world title contention. Don't get me wrong, I love a good journeyman, a la Glen Johnson, but Matinez doesn't even bother getting in shape any more.Originally posted by joeboxerOh and Larry Donald got beat Gilbert Martinez and put up an Ok show with Kirk Johnson in his last fight, so its not like he is that bad.
As far as keeping as not losing to a no name guy goes, you can't get much more no-name than Martinez. It's possible, but you would have to try reeally hard.
And Larry Donald didn't lose to Gilbert Martinez. Not that I'm a fan, or anything, I'm just keeping the facts straight.Comment

Martinez is a perfect tune-up punching bag, he has no power, he can't move, but he can take a decent punch, so any top heavyweight looking to keep busy will always look to a guy like Martinez (from the SacTown by the way) to stay in the public eyes and ears....can't blame Peter's management on this one, all of the top heavyweights are either scheduled for a fight, with Don King, or both.....Comment

Except that he's wasting a fight, risking an injury, e.g., a cut, and making me angry by taking this guy on. Look, I like Peter a lot, but if he's gonna keep busy, he oughta do it against the type of opponent I mentioned. At least there's some kind of question about who wins.Originally posted by joseHe's just keeping busy, nothing wrong with that.
If I were his manager, and I wanted my fighter to stay sharp, I'd pick a guy like Ray Austin, who's on a decent run but is old, Maskaev, who poses a threat...sort of, or DaVarryl Williamson, who showed so well against Klitschko. **** this ****, though.Comment

Yes I can. I just did at the beginning of this thread.Originally posted by SacTown1Martinez is a perfect tune-up punching bag, he has no power, he can't move, but he can take a decent punch, so any top heavyweight looking to keep busy will always look to a guy like Martinez (from the SacTown by the way) to stay in the public eyes and ears....can't blame Peter's management on this one, all of the top heavyweights are either scheduled for a fight, with Don King, or both.....
But look, seriously, this guy was supposed to retire following the Johnson fight. And as far as tuning up against a punching bag, how about any of the fighters I just mentioned a bit ago? Ok, Donald and Johnson can both move, and they may be connected with King, I'm not sure, and yeh, Davarryl Williamson has a fight scheduled, but please note: he doesn't have an opponent yet. Aright, King again. So try Austin or Maskaev.Comment

Garbage = Garbage, no matter how bad it stinks.....Originally posted by whdempseyExcept that he's wasting a fight, risking an injury, e.g., a cut, and making me angry by taking this guy on. a fight with an Austin/Maskaev/WIlliamson is equally as worhtless as a match-up with Martinez, just becuase Martinez stinks worse doesn't mean that the other piles of garbage in the heap are any better per-say....
this is why Martinez gets the nod vs those other guys, if you're gonna fight garbage, find yourself the smelliest pile and trash it!!!Comment

hmm
While I wish Peter would fight someone better than Martinez, you lso have to consider a number of factors. A lot of heavyweights (including Johnson I believe) have fights coming up.
Also, it's hard to not fight someone in the heavyweight division in a stay busy fight that isn't fairly low in class. I mean, seriously, there aren't that many options, and while there are a few decent options, it's very possibly that those guys wouldn't take a fight vs Peter because of the high-risk low-reward factor.
We'll see in the future whether or not he means business, but I wouldn't judge him too much by this one crappy opponent (make no mistake though, the opponent is crappy). Michael Grant would be a better choice.Comment
