160 and 175 would be deeper divisions, fewer places for Canelo to allegedly hide. Being "undisputed" in a deeper division would mean more meaningful mandatories arising.

Speaking about right this moment, I don't think many of the good 168 guys could make 160 so I don't think it would add much depth there. Most would probably go up to 175 and I'm not sure how effective they would be without the size advantage they have 168 so that might just be adding a bunch of B level guys to a division. Not necessarily a bad thing but also not necessarily an improvement over what we have now.

People aren't really complaining about Canelo because of the division he's in, he has one of the best resumes of any active fighter. The complaining about him and others is just because of the partisan nature of some sports fans

Yes, the WBOgus would potentially have remained a problem in Calzaghe's time but there at least would have been one fewer of them without a 168lb division.

True but then you could say sometimes these belts help some fights get made. They can be a bargaining chip and marketing tool for fighters who might otherwise be avoided for being high risk/low reward.

I like the idea of just having the original weightclasses but it wouldnt change much. The high profile guys would just have catch weight fights. So it would only harm the lower levels of the sport

I get it for belts. I'm no fan of the big name belt guy who makes a guy weigh 170 instead of the LHW limit type sh^t, but if there are two guys without belts who wanna fight each other at 163 who cares? Those fights technically happen all the time & are more common between guys ppl don't even know yet.

Those fights technically happen all the time & are more common between guys ppl don't even know yet.

I agree if no belts just make the good fights but i think it would create more situations like cottos (middleweight run) in title fights

Super-middleweight has served only to dilute the sport further. Imagine how much less crying about Canelo there would be without it? He would either be forced to stay at 160 or, having lost to Bivol, attempt to regain credibility against Beterbiev and probably get knocked out. Career over.

Going back further, Calzaghe would not have been able to hide behind the least prestigious belt in a wasteland division. He would either have been forced to fight Hopkins at 160 much sooner or face prime Jones at 175. Ditto for Sven Ottke.

A lot of great fighters and fights at 168. Cruiser weight has been a different story and that Bridgewater weight is ridiculous but the issue is that this is the era of super heavyweights
