Bob Arum REACTS To Dismal Devin Haney/Regis Prograis PPV Numbers

“The fact that it did so poorly is not really a reflection on Haney’s marketability. It’s just a fight that took place at the wrong time against fights that were free to air on other platforms like ESPN.

“On ESPN, we had a terrific, terrific featherweight championship [between WBO champion Robeisy Ramirez & Rafael Espinoza on the same night as Haney vs. Prograis on December 9th] match that was a huge upset [with Espinoza beating Robeisy] against it.

“So the fact that it [Haney vs. Prograis] didn’t do well [on DAZN PPV] doesn’t mean that Haney isn’t a good pay-per-view draw, but it didn’t do well,” Arum said

As I said on the podcast there were too many damn fights crammed into the weekend. That’s another issue, multiple networks competing for a small niche of people who by and large don’t see any mainstream stars on the ticket.

As someone who bought the PPV, the real reasons are really that:

1. It wasn’t a PPV fight/card
2. Haney hasn’t done himself any favors with his style in past fights. Fans still anticipate holding and jabbing from him.
3. If you don’t already have DAZN, you have to pay $25 to get DAZN and then $60 for the PPV. This is a sh/tty tactic that deters a lot of people.
4. Neither Haney or Prograis looked food in their last fight. Many thought Haney should’ve lost.

Ramirez vs Espinoza…i’m sorry but these two are relatively unknown. If you put up a great PPV fight with two great fighters that people want to see, Ramirez vs Espinoza isn’t stopping anyone from buying the PPV.

It certainly won't stop neutral boxing fans from purchasing if the card was truly worth it, but it will further hurt Haney's marketability in the future when given that not only did the PPV bomb, it also ended up not even being better than another title match that happened on the same day at a different platform.

- - I was Pioneer subscriber to DAZN, and they had some horrible teething problems that took a while to get ironed out, but always those early fights missed could be viewed in their archives. Eventually production trumped the matches as far as trying to view the fights where now I was forced to listen to ninny experts in shiny suits preen each other just to get to the bout, and then the teething problems surfaced again, so I let my subscription lapse.

Paid streaming is a good product, but even with big PPV fights, Arum's internet broadcaster suffers horrific lapses.

It's like when Manny/l'l floydy near billion$$$ was finally at the scratch line. Thousands of subscribers couldn't view the broadcast, but worse when the dummied up Vegas Commish was either too ****** or too corrupt, probably a horrific combination of both that they had to huddle together in a private scrum alter the scorecards were submitted to get the result they wanted for the bookies.

Whereas the more popular MLB/NFL/NBA/NHL put a steady, finished, transparent, highly accessible, high quality athletic product out to the public that they understand.

Boxing never has been able to do so reliably, ie neanderthals could do better than current boxing overseers.

Not to mention Haney's stinker style is a major turnoff though perhaps he'll advance the aggression he showed vs Prograis. We shall see.
