Most of the public didn't know Bivol in 2022, which is why Canelo cherry-picked him instead of fighting Beterbiev
in 2017, they were just random ass Eastern Euro contenders.
Kovalev was universally considered P4P top 5 in the world & he fought him twice, but yes, I'm sure he was shaking in his boots from two unknown, untested, Russian guys who weren't as good (at the time) as the guy he beat twice

And Canelo has the best resume in the sport, with a history of taking tough fights when he didn’t have to. Such as Trout and Lara. There’s no reason to think he wouldn’t have fought Ward.

If Dre didn't want to fight those guys who claim, he could've easily done what Canelo did when he didn't want to fight prime-Andrade or GGG or Charlo, which is MOVE UP.
And Dre retired because he beat the by far best guy in the division TWICE & Stevenson was never going to fight him or anybody else who was a real threat.
But yes, he was so afraid of fighting guys who weren't anywhere near a P4P list at the time.

Stop what? Trout was the definition of high risk low reward at that point, having ruined a money fight for Canelo by beating Cotto. And no one wanted to face Erislandy Lara before and for years after Canelo fought him. Bivol’s quality (and lack of star power) goes without saying.

You're talking about early 20s Canelo fighting talented fighters IN HIS WEIGHT CLASS at the beginning of his career
Versus him fighting the almost consensus P4P #1 fighter in the sport, who at that point was 3 weight classes above him.
There's no way in hell he was going to skip over GGG at 160 to move up to 175 to fight the #1 P4P fighter in the world.
He didn't want to fight GGG at 160, claiming 160 was too big for him, hence the term "Caneloweight", yet he was going to go all the way up to 175 to fight the much bigger Andre Ward?
It makes ZERO since.
And we all knew he fought Bivol because he misjudged how good he was because of his low profile and lack of activity prior to their fight
It was a cherrypick gone wrong

He wanted to rematch him with no stakes, that's why Bivol turned him down
He wants to fight for Bivol's belts, so when he loses he still gets to be the king at 168.
Bivol wanted to fight for HIS belts, since he won the fight, but Canelo won't take the risk of being beltless.
If he loses, "he's too small, that's not his natural weight class"
If he wins it's, "look at how Canelo beat the much bigger guy".
