Canelo fought Lara when GGG was ducking him.

But no wait, Canelo had to fight all of those fighters all at once! How dare he!?
Neither cotto nor junior were ranked higher than ggg.

From the obvious ones, not rematching Lara was bad. Aging out Golovkin not one, not two, but three times was weak sauce. Getting busted for PEDs in the middle was worse.

Not fighting Jermall is not a good look. Choosing the most vulnerable champion at LHW (Kovalev) coming off a short camp and tough fight was weak.. but understandable. Avoiding Zurdo I never understood. Prior to getting exposed by Bivol, he was Mexican, undefeated, and wanted to fight Canelo. I'm sure there are others I forget.
How did he age out Golovking the first two times? When was she supposed to fight him? Canelo was not prime when he fought him the first time, was he supposed to give GGG the advantage fighting him when he wasn't ready, GGG was his first fight at 160.

But they offered Kovalev the fight before he fought Yarde. Since late May/June they were negotiating. Even a few weeks to the Yarde fight in August they were still in talks for September until Kovalev decided to double dip knowing Canelo had no dance partner, he fought Yarde hoping/knowing he'd still get the Canelo fight next and he did. Many fighters have back to back fights with less time then Kovalev did, like Jose Luis Castillo fighting Corrales right after beating Diaz.

I don't know what the offer was when the Yarde fight was finalized. Kovalev was negotiating 2 fights at the same time and the mandatory Yarde fight finished first.

The bottom line though is, I don't care. What I care about is the facts surrounding the fight as it actually happened. Kovalev had insufficient time to recover from a tough fight and more importantly Canelo imposed a weight clause.

What fight was Canelo supposed to take but didn't? Kovalev on a level field, that would have been great!

What 27 year old fighter isn't prime after being pro for 12 years? That's a horrible take. Canelo's fights with Khan, Smith and Chavez did absolutely nothing for his legacy and were intentional stay busy fights. The whole "first fight" at 160 is bs too. There's no athlete on earth who would want to be 35/36 compared to 27/28.
