Comments Thread For: Crawford on Changing Boxing Business: 'That Eliminates A Lot of Things, Like Promoters, Managers ... People Not Gonna Like That'

Welterweight champion Terence Crawford thinks structural changes could be coming soon to the boxing business. Omaha, Nebraska's Crawford, who holds all four 147-pound titles, was asked in a recent interview to give his thoughts on the recent rift between Ryan Garcia and top brass at his promotional company, Golden Boy, namely founder Oscar De La Hoya and his partner Bernard Hopkins.

I applaud Crawford for sticking up for his fellow boxers lately. You can tell the whole set up for his fight against Spence was a pain to make since so many hands wanted a piece of the pie.

Spence also spoke out against the alphabet mafias in boxing and their rules. Amanda Serrano just told WBC to eat a picha. Hopefully changes do get made, peace out DLH, Arum, Hearn and Haymon that would be so great if they didn’t have the final say in boxers careers

The one area that Crawford still doesn’t get is a boxer should be paid akin to what that boxer is producing. If you out bums in seats and produce high viewership, that literally should translate to a bigger slice of the pie. Boxing will always have to be promoted by some entity, be that a traditional promotion or that be a streaming service or network. If anything the future means boxers will make less than they have because the networks and streaming services are in business to make money, not throw it away

There is no wholesale change coming to boxing anytime soon. Promoters are needed. Ask Curtis Jackson.

Lets just get the network deals out of the sport.

Lets hope the people that run Espn, Amazon and Dazn start listening to what diehard fans like all of us want and force the promotions to make better fights.

PBC better study how dazn failed because of the garbage they put on and not repeat the same thing with Amazon. I doubt it, but I will try to stay positive.

Let’s be real, boxing’s suits think they’ve pulled some kids from the ****** and the trailer park who don’t know anything and won’t be able to stand up for themselves. To me it’s clear exploitation.

In football (soccer to you hombres), players ain’t exactly from middle class backgrounds. But they still have way more agency re: the direction of their careers than boxers seem to

I whole heartedly agree that most fighters are overpaid. But if promoters can’t promote why are they paid ? You have a guy like Crawford who has a really entertaining, eye catching style, all world talent, high KO ratio, and a slew of accomplishments. His main job is to fight and he does a great job of that. His promoters job is to promote his fights, and that hasn’t been done well.

if all a promoter does is serve as the middle man between the network and the fighter then what am I paying you to “promote” me for ?

I get it. A promotional company builds fighters and does the matchmaking, etc. but i think the system, the network deals, and the promoters roles certainly need to be re-evaluated to make the sport better and more cohesive.

Managers and promotional companies are necessary evils. Unless a fighter has established themselves and can break away very few can have a career with out any of those two. Plus some will invest in their fighters hoping they hit it big as it goes.

There is no straight answer on this, one thing is for sure that promotional companies aligning themselves exclusively with a network has hurt the sport.

Big fights arnt getting made because the promoters are greedy fighters sign a 2 fight contract with options etc, bla bla bla Pac/Mayweather Bud/Spenc Tyson/lLewis and countless others , Don King was a master of this.

He's not wrong. The current system doesn't serve anyone, not the fighters and not the fans. The best don't fight the best and if you ask why, "it's the business of boxing", i.e. the promoters and networks.

You want to follow the sport? Be prepared to sign up and pay for numerous sources or just resign yourself to stealing streams.
