Andre Ward Proclaims That He's A Racist

I don't really care to be honest, I enjoyed watching his fights and that's what should matter they are boxers not philanthropists after all.Comment

His dad was white (passed away) He didn't meet his mother until he was already a boxer.
Yeah. Ward has always been really fair and good about things. I remember Barbershop Conversations was trying to get him to get on that Young Pharoh bandwagon crap. I can't remember what Barbershop was saying, but it was some racial thing. And Ward was like: "Look man. I know what you're about. You have to understand that my mother is white and my father is black. So I'm not about that." It was something like that.
Ward was always cool about stuff and really fair, which is why I always had a lot of respect for him. He was a great boxer, despite what some people think, and he was a great commentator (so long as he wasn't talking about Shakur). He was the most fair guy out there. So this is why I'm shocked by his tweet.
I think people listen to a lot of these fan channels out there, who race bait and pollute the mind. If you spend too much time on the Internet, it has a way of warping one's views of the world. The world is a much better place than what the Internet shows IMO.
If someone else made the tweet Ward made, I'd have assumed it was racist. It reads like a racist tweet, but I'd give Ward the benefit of the doubt since he hasn't shown a racist side before.Last edited by _Rexy_; 11-22-2023, 06:01 PM.Comment

The part of it that makes it look racist to me was the inclusion of Mayweather and Hoplins saying "our type will always beat your type" because the three of them didn't have the same fight style. But like I mentioned above, Ward gets the benefit of the doubt on this, because he's always come off more as the voice of reason in those situations.Comment

People bring up Chavez/Whitaker all the ****ing time, what are you talking about? These conversations require a lot of understanding, grace and nuance which I don’t believe people care to give. Usually when black boxers fight and the match was close or competitive? If the black boxer wins the decision is deemed a robbery.
Sergey vs Andre.
Floyd Vs Castillo.
Floyd vs Oscar.
Floyd vs Cotto
Floyd vs Maidana
Tank vs Cruz
Devin vs Loma
Yet when Chavez vs Whitaker is a draw or Joe vs Bernard is a win for Joe? These aren’t seen as robberies. It just is what it is.
Floyd face Castillo twenty plus years ago. People still bring it up as a way to make it seem as if his career wasn’t special or his record wasn’t legitimate. So it’s the same reoccurring theme people notice and speak up on.
Remember when Bernard beat Kelly? How much tension was in the air, it was because that dynamic of white vs black. So the gripe will always be, why is there an issue when a black boxer faces someone of another so called race and you aren’t given benefit of the doubt for winning without there needing to be this long winded spiel as to why you cheated or your win isn’t valid?
And nobody has called Floyd/Cotto a robbery. Christ, that was easily a 10-2 fight.Comment

Chavez is usually built up as a Superman of sorts, especially when in connection to Floyd. So people act as if he would beat him even though he couldn’t clearly beat Whitaker. So then yes, it’s something people talk about but today? No,
Dog I personally believe at best? Cotto vs Floyd was a 9-3 fight. Yet a lot of people like i said, believe he was cheated. Simply because it was competitive.Comment

Cotto/Floyd wasn't even competitive though. Cotto had good moments, but when I saw that on your list my first thought was "You sure you didn't see Canelo/Cotto? and made a mistake?" And I still see people bring up Chavez/Whittaker on the list of greatest robberies but we might just have different sites we use. I don't have twitter, and that seems to be where most people talk boxing lol

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube. Maybe competitive isn’t the word. I’d say active. I thought he clearly lost to Floyd. Lots of folks I know ignore Chavez vs Whitaker. Like it’s a mulligan
